San Massimo between Village History and Mountain Landscape
San Massimo has medieval origins dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries. In the medieval historic center, the enclosing walls of the castle are still recognizable, although only in fragments. The municipal area of San Massimo also includes Campitello Matese, a hamlet in the upper part of the municipality. The municipality therefore extends from the medieval historic center to the high plateau of Campitello Matese.
Fontana di San Massimo
The Fontana di San Massimo stands on a scenic overlook beside the town's main road. The fountain also includes an underground passage with small stalactites and stalagmites that has been opened to visitors. The fountain and the passage thus connect a visible point along the road with an underground area.
Churches and Architectural History
Several churches add to San Massimo's historical heritage. The Church of Santa Maria delle Fratte was built between 1300 and 1400. Its portal has a Gothic pointed arch and displays the coat of arms of the Knights of Malta. The Church of San Michele Arcangelo was first built after the plague of 1656. It was rebuilt twice, in 1745 and at the beginning of the 19th century. The Church of SS. Salvatore was rebuilt on the ruins of a 15th-century church that had been destroyed in the earthquake of 1805. The history of the churches therefore encompasses both a medieval construction period and several clearly dated rebuilding phases.
Folklore and Traditional Dress
Local culture also includes the Le Gemme del Matese folklore group. It was re-founded under this name 20 years ago and performs with traditional musical and rhythmic instruments. The traditional dress of San Massimo is a distinctive visual testament to the local life and culture of the town. Traditional music and inherited clothing thus stand alongside one another as independent forms of expression.
Campitello Matese and the Mountain Landscape
Campitello Matese is located in the upper part of the municipality of San Massimo; it is a hamlet. The high plateau there lies at 1,450 meters above sea level and appears as a natural amphitheater. Its landscape is shaped by the ridges of Gallinola, which reaches 1,922 meters above sea level. The elevation expressly belongs to the high plateau of Campitello Matese, while Gallinola and its ridges shape the surrounding mountain landscape.
Getting to Campitello Matese
From Strada Statale 17 dell’Appennino Abruzzese ed Appulo Sannitica, take the exit for Località San Massimo and continue for 17 km to Campitello Matese. The 17 km constitute the specifically stated section between the exit and the hamlet when traveling there and can accordingly be planned as a separate route segment.
Autumn Produce from the Municipal Area
In the municipal area of San Massimo, chestnuts, mushrooms and truffles are among the typical autumn products. Alongside its history and landscape, they give the town a seasonal culinary dimension.
