Discover Capracotta: Hiking Trails, Cross-Country Skiing and Local History

Capracotta combines an extensive network of hiking trails with winter sports in Prato Gentile, sacred architecture and a distinctive high-altitude landscape. Prato Gentile, the Sangro Valley and the surrounding mountains provide the town with different geographical reference points.

Hiking and winter sports in Prato Gentile

Capracotta's official hiking network comprises 13 trails with a total length of 80 kilometres. This figure describes the entire network, not a single route; for planning a day trip, the specific trail is therefore the relevant factor. The Sentiero 309 runs along the cross-country ski tracks of Prato Gentile in Capracotta and can be hiked year-round. In winter, it can also be used with cross-country skis or snowshoes. Its route along the ski tracks thus connects a hiking trail with the winter sports area of Prato Gentile. Anyone planning a day outdoors can base their choice on the selected route and the season, without interpreting the total size of the network as a single tour.

Also located in Prato Gentile is the Mario Di Nucci cross-country ski track. It is approximately 15 kilometres long and comprises three loops: two are intended for competition, and one for recreational use and for warming up the athletes. The track length and the division into loops provide different information for planning: the first describes the entire course, while the second describes its internal structure.

Churches and regional history

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta was consecrated on 14 September 1755. Its monumental sandstone structure and Baroque façade tower over the panorama of the Sangro Valley. The Santuario della Madonna di Loreto is closely connected with the history of Capracotta, particularly with the centuries-old tradition of transhumance maintained by the local community.

High-altitude landscape and nearby destinations

The Giardino della Flora Appenninica di Capracotta is a natural botanical garden at an altitude of 1,550 metres and is among the highest-altitude botanical gardens in Italy. The nearby area of Capracotta also includes Monte il Campo, Monte Capraro, Monte Santa Luca and La Montagna; all four are referred to as mountains.

The Museo della civiltà contadina is a museum in the area surrounding Capracotta. Trebula is an archaeological site in the same area, while the Castello di Gamberale is another historical destination there, as a castle. The Museo civico memorie della vita contadina is also a museum in the surrounding area. Visits to the Museo d'Arte sartoriale S.E.B.A. are available for groups upon request.

Event at Prato Gentile

An event is held annually on the first Sunday in August on the Prato Gentile plateau, attracting people from Capracotta and the neighbouring regions.
