Between the Volturno and the Medieval Town Centre

Colli a Volturno is a medieval village also known as “la piccola Parigi”. It was founded around the 10th century by Benedictine monks from San Vincenzo al Volturno. The old town centre preserves gates, defensive walls, old passages, alleyways, narrow side paths and stone steps.

The historic buildings include the Chiesa di San Leonardo, a 15th-century church in Colli a Volturno. It houses important works by Pietro Brunetti. The Mulino Raddi also points to the former use of the local waterways: the mill began operating in 1830 and was powered by the waters of the Volturno. The Volturno aqueduct, which supplied Venafro, also crosses the entire area of Colli a Volturno.

Riverside Paths, Mountains and Seasonal Nature

In the area of Colli a Volturno, there are extensive flat areas along the banks of the Volturno that are suitable for walks on foot and horseback.

Monte San Paolo features evergreen vegetation and Mediterranean maquis, providing a habitat for wild boar, foxes and hares. Monte La Falconara is covered in scrubland and includes a pine forest frequented by day-trippers and hikers. La Falconara and Colle Alto are also considered nearby mountains; Monte della Foresta and Monte Castelnuovo are located in the vicinity of Colli a Volturno.

The Serra del Lago offers a distinctive seasonal phenomenon: in winter, it transforms into a large pond and serves as a resting place for migratory birds. The section of the Volturno located within Colli a Volturno borders a protected area and is considered a site of great natural interest.

Trails and Samnite History

The Sentiero Colli-Monte San Paolo begins in the built-up area of Colli a Volturno, is five kilometres long and has a stated walking time of two hours.

Monte San Paolo is also home to a Samnite fortification with a circumference of six kilometres. The settlement on the mountain is identified with the Samnite oppidum of Aquilonia, a legendary military base established to protect Samnium and the site of the battle between the Romans and Samnites in 293 BC.

Nature and cultural history also come together in the surrounding area. The International War Museum of the World Wars is a museum near Colli a Volturno. Mennella - Castello, a castle, is also located nearby. The surrounding area also includes the Museo di Santa Maria delle Monache, a museum, and Saint Francesco Palace, a palace.

Festivals Throughout the Year

Several dated festivals shape the town’s cultural calendar. The festival of Sant'Antonio di Padova on 13 June includes a public auction of donated natural products. The celebrations of Sant'Antonino and Sant'Emidio on 2 September include a procession, fireworks, a marching band and evening entertainment. The festival of San Leonardo, the patron saint of Colli a Volturno, is celebrated on 6 November.
