Pilgrimage and Sacred Architecture

The Santuario di Maria Addolorata in Castelpetroso has been a destination for pilgrims since the Marian apparition on 22 March 1888. The sacred architecture also includes the Basilica Minore dell’Addolorata: it is built entirely from local stone and has a radial layout with seven side chapels. There is a water source near the Luogo delle Apparizioni. The old Tempietto was restored in 2006 to make collecting the water easier.

Historic Centre and Regional History

The historic centre of Castelpetroso is a medieval village with narrow lanes, old stone houses and small squares. Porta del Parco is the only surviving one of the village’s three original gates. Today’s parish church of San Martino can be dated to the mid-13th century. It was built on an early medieval church whose construction dates back to around the year 1000. On the ground floor of the Palazzo Marchesale is the “Artistico Presepe Molisano”, which covers approximately 30 m². It depicts a section of the Molise landscape and shows true-to-scale reproductions of the most significant buildings in Castelpetroso and the Molise region. The basement of the Palazzo Marchesale also contains a Samnite furnace discovered in the Castelpetroso area, which is completely preserved.

Nature Trails and Activities

The “Monte Patalecchia, torrenti Lorda e Longaniello” Regional Nature Reserve covers 2,223 hectares and also includes areas of Castelpetroso. Walking, trekking, hiking, snowshoeing, horse riding and mountain biking are possible there.
