Macchiagodena: Matese Landscape, Castle and Nature Trails

Macchiagodena is known as “Terrazza sul Matese” because the Matese massif shapes the landscape. The town therefore combines the landscape shaped by the Matese with the Castello di Macchiagodena, nature trails and a regional polenta tradition.

Vallefredda and the Matese Landscape

The Vallefredda valley in Macchiagodena features conifer plantations, coppice woodland, rocky cliffs, grazing slopes and moisture-loving vegetation. The Vallefredda area is located within the SIC La Montagnola and forms part of a LIPU reserve.

Nature Observation and Trails

The Riserva naturale Rio Secco e Piana Palomba nature reserve is open and accessible to visitors year-round. Ninety-eight bird species have been recorded there, including the red kite, peregrine falcon and raven. The Sentiero LIPU – Rio Secco offers an easy hike through nature in the LIPU reserve that is accessible to everyone. From the trail, panoramic views extend from the Matese to the Mainarde.

Castello di Macchiagodena

The Castello di Macchiagodena existed by the Angevin period at the latest. A small triangular fort was later expanded and converted into a residential palace. Today, the castle preserves the bases of the polygonal surrounding walls and two sturdy towers made of exposed dressed stone blocks. The castle grounds also contain a large stone lion from the 13th century. Here, the complex combines medieval architectural history with visible remains of its former fortifications.

Historical Traces and Reading in the Town

In the Macchiagodena area, near the Valle Fredda spring, an Italic temple stands at a branch of the Tratturello Pescasseroli-Candela. An extensive settlement is located at Capoccia, where roof tiles and glossy black Campana A-type pottery have been identified.

Since 2016, Macchiagodena has been the national headquarters of the Associazione Nazionale Borghi della Lettura. Also in 2016, the municipality established “La Terrazza della Lettura” as an open-air library on the main square below the medieval castle. There, visitors could read books as well as take them and return them. The establishment of a Casa del Libro was also planned in the medieval Torre, intended to house books donated by tourists as well as by book and culture enthusiasts.

Polenta and Local Tradition

Traditional Macchiagodena polenta comes in a red version with sausage and peppers, as well as a white version with baccalà and onions. When preparing Polenta e Baccalà, the spoon-sized portions of polenta are called “fattaruoli”.

The Via di San Francesco – Con le ali ai piedi route passes through Sant’Elena Sannita, Macchiagodena, Santa Maria del Molise, Carpinone, Sessano del Molise, Chiauci, Pescolanciano, Carovilli, Vastogirardi and San Pietro Avellana in the province of Isernia.
