Castel San Vincenzo between the lake, the Mainarde and the monastery landscape

Castel San Vincenzo combines the Mainarde landscape with a lake, archaeological evidence and religious buildings. The municipal area belongs to the Mainarde sector of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. Lago di Castel San Vincenzo lies at the foot of the Mainarde.

Hiking and activities at the lake

For a manageable hike, the M4 trail is a good choice. It leads from Castel San Vincenzo to Vallealare, takes 50 minutes and is 2.858 kilometres long. The trail is classified as a moderately difficult hiking trail, difficulty level E. Sport fishing is possible at Lago di Castel San Vincenzo. You can also go canoeing there or take to the water in small sailboats.

Near the lake there is an equipped campsite and a riding stable. The Museo Oscar Caporaso serves as a starting point for guided hikes, education on sustainability and environmental interpretation activities. A riders’ gathering is also scheduled in Castel San Vincenzo in the third week of May. A Santo Stefano market is scheduled for the first week of August.

Archaeology and the history of San Vincenzo al Volturno

The archaeological area of San Vincenzo al Volturno preserves the remains of an early medieval abbey complex, including the remains of the Basilica of San Vincenzo Maggiore and the Basilica of San Vincenzo Minore. The monumental monastery of San Vincenzo al Volturno lies immediately outside Castel San Vincenzo and borders the municipality of Rocchetta al Volturno. The monastery was founded in the 8th century.

The Basilica of San Vincenzo Maggiore was consecrated in 808. The sightseeing route to the San Vincenzo Minore area begins by crossing the Volturno via the Ponte della Zingara. The main gate to the archaeological area is located at Frazione Cartiera 1, Castel San Vincenzo (IS).

A special interior of the monastery is the Crypt of Epiphanius, which contains frescoes. Santo Stefano and San Martino Vescovo are among the two most important churches in Castel San Vincenzo that can be visited.

Museo Oscar Caporaso and the townscape

The Museo Oscar Caporaso is located in a baronial palace among the lanes of Castel San Vincenzo. Its ornithological and entomological collection is complemented by an exhibition of mammals representative of the wildlife of the national park.

The Chiesa di San Martino also offers specific art-historical details: it has a mosaic floor and a 13th-century apse. The Chiesetta dell’Assunta was built in 1900 on the site of a disused old cemetery. In the Cripta di San Lorenzo, you can see an underground oratory reached via a staircase.

Religious sites in a distinctive landscape

The Cappella Rupestre di S. Michele lies inside a rock and dates from around the year 1000. It was formerly a hermitage founded by Benedictines.
