Predosa: Castle History and the Orba Landscape

Predosa combines a clearly recognizable castle history with the river landscape of the Torrente Orba. A castle in Predosa has been documented since May 16, 1567. Its historical role extends beyond the building itself: the castle made Predosa a Milanese outpost that stood against the Monferrato presence on one side and the Genoese presence on the other. In the hamlet of Retorto, the Church of San Bartolomeo was built in 1827. Retorto is a hamlet of Predosa on the banks of the Torrente Orba. When planning your trip, you can combine cultural and historical interests with nature and river experiences here.

The Nature Reserve on the Torrente Orba

The Torrente Orba is considered Predosa’s main local attraction. Its natural character is evident in the Riserva naturale del Torrente Orba. It comprises two separate sections of the river: one upstream from the town of Predosa and one between Borgo Retorto and Casalcermelli. The nature reserve protects remaining sections of intact riparian woodland. Foxes, badgers, martens, weasels, hares and roe deer live in these woodlands; there is also a population of wild boar originating from the Apennines. Predosa therefore offers a clearly defined natural area with diverse wildlife alongside its historical townscape.

On Foot, by Bike or by Canoe

Along the banks of the Torrente Orba, you can walk or cycle from the castle’s old masonry to the characteristic Borgo Retorto. The paths in the Riserva naturale del Torrente Orba can be explored on foot, offering another way to experience the river and riparian landscape at your own pace. Canoeing is also possible along the watercourse in the area around the Torrente Orba. Depending on your personal interests, the options range from a walk through the natural area and a cycling tour along the riverbank to an activity on the water.

Wine and Summer Tradition in Mantovana

Regional food, wine and event-related experiences also provide useful points of orientation. The Cantina Sociale di Mantovana offers tastings of fine wines made from grapes grown in the hilly areas. Mantovana hosts the traditional summer Sagra del bollito misto e bagnet. The two themes add different accents to your trip planning: the Cantina represents wine from the hills, while the Sagra is a seasonal local tradition.

Discover Predosa According to Your Interests

When choosing a hotel, you can consider Predosa according to the type of trip you want. The castle and church provide points of interest for cultural and historical exploration, while the banks of the Torrente Orba, Borgo Retorto and the nature reserve paths place walks and cycling tours at the center. Canoeing adds an activity on the water; wine tastings and the summer Sagra offer their own culinary and event-related highlights. This allows you to focus on the aspects of Predosa that suit your interests and your preferred pace of travel.
