Castellazzo Bormida: Churches, Art and Circular Trail
Castellazzo Bormida is a destination for you if you want to discover Italian local history not only through a single building, but through several different traces. The Torrione, church interiors, a small museum, religious heritage, a circular trail through the cultural landscape and a regionally connected agricultural product create a varied picture for visitors.
Military History and Sacred Art
The Torrione forms part of the fortification ring of Castellazzo Bormida dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. In the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Corte, a fresco from the late 14th century depicts Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian. The church is traditionally identified with a church mentioned in a document from 1005; its foundation is attributed to Maria, the daughter of the Lombard King Adalbert. This gives you access to the town's history through a combination of architectural evidence, religious art and a tradition reaching far back into the past.
Churches with Personal and Medieval History
The Chiesa di Santi Carlo e Anna leads into the story of Paolo Daneo: between 1720 and 1721, he wrote the first text of the Passionist Rule in the sacristy behind the church. The rooms occupied by Paolo Daneo in the Chiesa di Santi Carlo e Anna now house a small museum about his life. The Chiesa di Santo Stefano probably originated as a monastic foundation in the second half of the 11th century. Of its oldest Romanesque components, the three slightly altered apses and the crypt have survived in particular. These two places offer different points of focus – one a biographical trace, the other early Romanesque architecture.
Trinità da Lungi and the Santuario
The Chiesa della Trinità da Lungi was probably built around 1130 by the canons regular of Santa Croce di Mortara and was first mentioned in a document in 1134. Large parts of the apse and the course of several walls remain today from the originally Romanesque church; they are complemented by refined, sculpturally designed capitals with Byzantine influences and frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries. In the Santuario della Beata Vergine della Creta, the corridor leading to the Rotonda displays numerous painted votive tablets. In 1947, Pius XII granted the Santuario the title of Protectress of the Centaurs by papal bull; since 1946, an international motorcycle riders' gathering has been held there every year on the second Sunday in July.
Religious Traditions and Local Character
Records from the 16th century document nine confraternities in Castellazzo Bormida. At Christmas, the Confraternita della Pietà houses a mechanized nativity scene. Together with the museum, the frescoes and the preserved architectural elements, these places show how differently religious and cultural traces can be expressed in the municipality. You will find both details of art-historical interest and traditions linked to particular times of the year.
Circular Trail and Zucca di Castellazzo Bormida
The Anello Castellazzo B.Da - Castelspina circular trail runs through cultivated fields and wooded strips of land near the Bormida River. It begins at Piazzale I Maggio in Castellazzo Bormida and ends at the Chiesa Santo Stefano in the same municipality. Zucca di Castellazzo Bormida is a traditional agricultural and food product particularly associated with the plain of the Bormida River. When choosing your hotel, these specific points of interest may be decisive – depending on whether you want to focus on the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Corte, the Anello Castellazzo B.Da - Castelspina or the Zucca di Castellazzo Bormida.
