Silvano d'Orba: Vineyards, Grappa and Historic Churches
Silvano d'Orba Among Vineyards and River Landscapes
Silvano d'Orba lies in the hills of Ovada, near the confluence of the Piota stream and the Orba River. The town is surrounded by vineyards where DOC wines such as Dolcetto and Barbera are produced. This creates a destination where the hilly landscape and regional wine culture emerge as closely connected themes.
Grappa and Enjoyment with a Specific Occasion
Silvano d'Orba is home to two historic distilleries that produce grappa using traditional methods. This theme is particularly vividly presented during the Open Days at Distilleria Gualco, entitled “La distilleria è aperta”. The event takes place every year on the second weekend of November and has been held since the 1990s.
During the Open Days, visitors can watch the distillation of pomace into grappa, take part in guided tours and visit the 18th-century ageing cellar. Tastings of the distillery's own spirits are also offered, along with a selection of local gastronomic specialities. If you enjoy planning a trip around a regional food and drink event, this date provides a clearly defined thematic focus.
Churches and Historic Buildings
The Chiesa di San Pietro Apostolo impresses with vaulted ceilings decorated with frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Saint Peter. The frescoes are attributed to Pietro Ivaldi. The furnishings also include an imposing organ built by Camillo Guglielmo Bianchi in 1856.
The Chiesa di San Sebastiano was built between 1742 and 1766 on the remains of an earlier oratory and was elevated to parish church status in 1784. Its neoclassical façade and three-nave interior give the building a clearly recognisable architectural profile.
Castello Adorno has a square ground plan made of hewn stone blocks, a projecting crenellated crown and four massive corner towers. It is privately owned and not open to visitors inside. The Torrazzi are the ruins of two towers on a river terrace near the Orba and are probably considered the remains of a larger fortification system.
Hill Paths and a Long Memory
The Chiesa di San Pancrazio stands on the hill above Silvano d'Orba and was probably built in the 12th century. The Santuario di San Pancrazio can be reached on foot from the Borgo via an old, impressive path and offers panoramic views over the Orba Valley. If you would like to combine your stay with a walk and a landscape view, this combination is particularly clearly defined.
The Pieve di Santa Maria della Neve probably has origins dating back to before the 10th century; according to tradition, its foundation goes back to the 6th century. The historical scope of the town therefore extends far beyond the later buildings and more recent event culture.
A Recurring Summer Cultural Event
The summer puppet-theatre workshop in Silvano d'Orba takes place every summer and has been running since 2001. If you are interested not only in architecture and food and drink but also in performing arts, this event is one of the town's tangible seasonal occasions.
