Mazzarelli is a destination where religious history, personal memory and a varied surrounding area come together. At the Santuario Santa Maria Mazzarello, you will encounter art and lived spirituality; the Casa natìa offers an insight into the life story of Maria Domenica Mazzarello. There is also the Chiesetta di San Lorenzo, a missionary exhibition, as well as cultural and scenic destinations in the surrounding area. You can therefore shape your stay according to your own interests, balancing reflection, historical curiosity and mountain landscapes.

Santuario Santa Maria Mazzarello

The Santuario Santa Maria Mazzarello was consecrated on 4 August 1972 by Monsignor Giuseppe dell’Uomo, Bishop of Acqui. A statue of Saint Maria Mazzarello stands on the gable, welcoming pilgrims from all over the world. Inside is the painting „Gloria di Santa Maria Mazzarello“ by Caffaro Rore. Beneath the altar lies a vertebra relic of Saint Maria Mazzarello. These individual elements give the sanctuary a clear religious and artistic character.

Casa natìa and Mostra missionaria

The Casa natìa di S. Maria Domenica Mazzarello is the birthplace of Maria Domenica Mazzarello, who was born on 9 May 1837. At the same time, it is a place for visits and reflection, as well as a destination for pilgrims and groups. The Mostra missionaria is located in the same building as the Casa natìa di Madre Mazzarello and complements the visit. It displays material from the institute’s establishments on five continents. Audiovisual media provide information about the history and current missionary activity of the institute.

Chiesetta di San Lorenzo

The Chiesetta di San Lorenzo was built by the residents of Mazzarelli and blessed on 24 May 1843. In 1964, it was rebuilt and restored to its original dimensions. On 10 August, San Lorenzo is celebrated there with a church service; civic festivities such as a lottery and a greased pole climbing event take place afterwards. In this way, the site combines religious tradition with a communal celebration.

Culture and Landscapes in the Surrounding Area

In the area around Mazzarelli, you will find Forte di Gavi, a fort; the Area Archeologica ed Espositiva di Libarna, an ancient site; Castello di Novi Ligure, a castle; and Palazzo Durazzo, a palace. Also located nearby are Monte Tobbio, a mountain, and the peaks Bric Castiglione, Bric della Croce and Monte Pracaban. This gives you a choice of cultural and historical destinations and notable scenic landmarks for planning your trip, without having to define the focus of your stay in advance as just one type of experience.

Pilgrimage Route and Travel Focus

The Mor…Nizza pilgrimage route ended at the Santuario dei Mazzarelli with a Eucharistic celebration. If you choose Mazzarelli for a cultural or pilgrimage-related trip to Italy, when selecting your hotel or accommodation you can first consider whether the religious sites and the life story of Maria Domenica Mazzarello, or the historical and scenic destinations in the surrounding area, should take priority for you.
