Conzano Between Hilltop Village and Wine Country

Conzano lies on the final foothills of Basso Monferrato and overlooks the valleys of the Grana and Rotaldo streams. The historic centre has the typical layout of a hilltop village: concentric streets and radial connections run at different levels. Walls, Fields and Winegrowing

Santa Lucia and San Maurizio

The present-day parish church of Santa Lucia goes back to Santa Maria di Conzano, which served as the castle chapel. Santa Lucia contains frescoes by the painter Luigi Faini as well as four 16th-century panels from the school of Spanzotti. The present church and its Romanesque bell tower date from the 15th century. Santa Lucia thus brings together architectural history, painting and the former castle chapel.

The abbey church of San Maurizio was built in 1418 in the Late Gothic style. The parish church of San Maurizio contains the tomb monument of Count Carlo Vidua.

Towers with Their Own Character

At the highest point of Conzano stands the medieval civic tower on a rocky spur. From there, views extend across the rice-growing plain and the nearby hills. The Torre dell’Orologio is built from blocks of locally quarried shell tuff. One tower opens up views of the landscape, while the other reveals a local building material.
