Montaldo Bormida among hills, trails and local culture

Montaldo Bormida lies in the hills of the upper Monferrato between the Orba Valley and the lower Bormida Valley. The landscape, trails, historic buildings and events give the town several distinct sides: they range from quiet valley paths and wooded sections to architecture, regional festivals and a cycling tour through the hills.

Hills, gardens and sweeping views

Parco Dotto combines the character of a garden with views across the landscape. It is a garden dating from the early years of the 20th century and features a viewing terrace overlooking the Rio Stanavazzo valley and the Apennines. The Percorso Verde “Avsein au rian” begins in Parco Dotto, connects Montaldo Bormida with Trisobbio and ends at the Piscine di Trisobbio. Its specific route creates a clear connection between the town, the park and the destination in Trisobbio.

Trails through valleys, fields and woodland

The Percorso Praielle runs on level ground between cultivated fields, vineyards and woodland along the valley path connecting Carpeneto with Montaldo Bormida. Another route is the Cascina Quaglia e Budello circular trail. It leads to Cascina Quaglia, a viewpoint over the small valleys southwest of Montaldo Bormida, and then descends through a forest of hazelnut, poplar and wild cherry trees to the hamlet of Scopitta. This brings different landscapes together without requiring you to commit to just one type of trail.

For another active perspective, the cycling tour through the hills of Montaldo Bormida is suitable for MTB, e-MTB and gravel bikes. Montaldo Bormida’s Centro sportivo also has tennis courts, a football pitch for seven- or eleven-a-side games, a playground and an adjacent dog area. At Azienda Agricola Cascina del Vento, farm experiences and educational activities are available.

Architecture and traces of history

The buildings also create distinctive landmarks. The Chiesa parrocchiale di San Michele Arcangelo was built from 1686 onwards. The year 1600 is inscribed on the stone architrave of the Oratorio della S.S. Annunziata e di San Rocco; the same oratory contains a finely crafted stucco altar from the 18th century. Palazzo Schiavina was built in 1673 and is well preserved.

Events with regional character

The events calendar extends across several months. In June, Montald-Art, “the colours of art”, is one of the events in Montaldo Bormida. The Sagra dello Stoccafisso takes place in the hamlet of Gaggina in July. August events include the Sagra della Pizza and “Vini pregiati e Stoccafisso”. In November, the Fiera del Tartufo e Castagnata is part of Montaldo Bormida’s calendar. Art, stockfish, pizza, wines, truffles and chestnuts each add their own focus to the local annual cycle.
