Fabbrica Curone: Hiking, Culture and Winter Sports

Fabbrica Curone offers marked trails, mountain landscapes, rural cultural heritage and winter sports. The Fabbrica Curone–Selvapiana trail, the museums in Lunassi and Morigliassi, the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta and the sports facilities in Caldirola reveal different sides of the area that can be combined on an independent trip.

Hiking Trails Between the Village and the High Mountains

Thanks to its location, Fabbrica Curone is suitable for trekking, walking, horse riding, mountain biking and skiing, and has numerous marked trails. The Fabbrica Curone–Selvapiana trail begins in the village opposite the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta. It initially follows an asphalt road and then continues as an unpaved path marked by the CAI as route 104. Classified as a category E trail, it is 6.93 km long; the stated walking time is 2 hours.

The Serra del Monte–Fabbrica Curone trail descends towards Fabbrica Curone along a scenic ridge path between downy oaks, manna ashes and black pines. Some sections have a steep gradient. Also classified as a category E trail, the Caldirola–Monte Ebro trail is 4.77 km long, with a stated walking time of 2 hours and 30 minutes. The trail reaches Monte Ebro at an elevation of 1,700 m; in clear weather, the summit offers a 360-degree view of the Alps and the Ligurian Sea.

Rural Heritage and Religious Architecture

The Museo della Civiltà Contadina "Lunassi" preserves tools, equipment, machinery, documents and objects that illustrate historic rural life in the mountains. The museum is divided into 26 sections and has more than 600 exhibits; today, only about half of them are on display. In the hamlet of Lunassi, the Circolo Lunassese regularly demonstrates the traditional production of charcoal, known in Italian as Carbonaia.

The Museo della Civiltà Contadina "Morigliassi" covers approximately 300 m² and has more than 2,000 original objects, including several rare pieces. The Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta provides a different historical focus. Following continuous religious use, it is still used as a parish church. The building dates from the 12th or 13th century and has three naves. Above the entrance portal is a low relief in local stone featuring complex zoomorphic symbolism.

Cycling and Winter Sports in Caldirola

The Caldirola Bike Park includes 4 downhill, 3 freeride, 3 all-mountain and 1 cross-country trail. These feature jumps of varying difficulty, bypass options for less experienced riders, berms and technically demanding sections. On the slopes of Monte Gropà and Monte Giarolo, the bike park has 11 trails accessible by chairlift.

Caldirola has four downhill ski runs, including a practice area for beginners, as well as a cross-country ski trail on the slopes of Monte Gropà. Caldirola is the only winter sports resort in the Province of Alessandria. The chairlift runs from the hamlet of La Gioia at 1,110 m in the municipality of Fabbrica Curone to Monte Gropà at 1,446 m.

Fattoria L'Aurora organises educational activities on farming and livestock breeding for families and groups of children. These include educational horse-riding activities in the mountains for beginners.
