Ottiglio: Castle, Church, Hiking Trail and Wine

Ottiglio combines a hilltop town shaped by tuff stone with a remarkable architectural history, woodland paths and a winegrowing tradition. Castle and Churches with Their Own History

Ottiglio Castle survived the wars that shook the territories of Monferrato in the 17th century. It is built of brick and tuff stone. This combination of a resilient architectural history and regional material makes the castle an important reference point for understanding the town.

Construction of the Church of San Germano began in 1761. Its interior is richly decorated and includes high-quality frescoes, including frescoes in the choir. The Church of San Germano is also chosen as a venue for classical music concerts.

Tuff Stone, Caves and Vineyards

Ottiglio’s houses are grouped on a hill and have tuff-stone façades. The material used for the castle and churches is therefore also reflected in the townscape. A walk through Ottiglio has a character strongly defined by the interplay of the hillside setting, houses and warm-looking expanses of tuff stone.

At Moleto, the Grotte dei Saraceni open into a hollow in the Valle dei Guaraldi below the high hill of San Germano.

The hills around Ottiglio were replanted with vines after the quarries closed. Viticulture has therefore become a visible part of the town’s landscape history. The Infernot Vinicea in Ottiglio offers wine tastings and wine sales, so the region’s character can also be experienced at a specific location beyond the vineyards.

Hiking Through Forest and Valley

The Sentiero La Valle dei Frati hiking trail begins at Via Mazza on Ottiglio’s main central road. This starting point is easy to identify when planning your trip if you would like to include the trail in your stay. The route follows a comfortable, level track through the forest.

In spring, numerous blossoms can be seen along the Sentiero La Valle dei Frati. In some places, there are views of the Valle dei Frati below. The trail therefore combines a level route through the forest with seasonal nature observations and occasional views into the valley below.

The Chapel of San Michele, which is situated in a scenic location, also has a distinctive history. It was relocated in 1968 to protect it from damage caused by quarry operations. Its present location is therefore directly connected with the area’s former use.

Wine and Ceramics as Local Experiences

The Infernot della maga Alcina Terra e Fuoco includes a ceramics workshop as well as an exhibition and sales area. Alongside the wine offerings of Infernot Vinicea, Ottiglio thus also reveals a strong craft tradition. The various places make a stay particularly interesting if you would like to connect regional materials, production and local history.

Ottiglio is therefore suited to a trip in which more than a single building takes center stage.
