Pozzolo Formigaro brings together its town centre, countryside and ancient roads, with traces dating from Roman and medieval times. The Castello di Pozzolo Formigaro was built around the 11th century as a medieval defensive castle in the plain. It stands on an alluvial terrace overlooking the plain.

A town centre with Roman connections

The historic centre of Pozzolo Formigaro lies along a Roman Via Quintana, a decumanus of the Roman centuriation of the area, laid out from the 2nd century BC onwards. The Via Fulvia was one of the Roman consular roads that crossed the area around Pozzolo Formigaro.

East of Pozzolo Formigaro, the Via Postumia runs under the name “Stradone dell’Imperatore”. The Stradone dell’Imperatore is a route through the countryside between Bettole di Pozzolo and Rivalta Scrivia, following the ancient Roman route. West of Pozzolo Formigaro, the Via Aemilia Scauri runs under the additional names “Via Levata” and “strà du diau” (“Devil’s Road”).

Archaeology in the countryside

Along the historic roads connected with Pozzolo Formigaro, Roman urns, oil lamps and coins have been found, pointing to settlements and necropolises from the Imperial period. The “Sulle vie di Roma” circular route in Pozzolo Formigaro connects archaeology, landscape and memory through Roman remains.

Art, churches and regional influences

In Pozzolo Formigaro, an art trail leads through the historic centre, connecting the Castello, the oratories and other examples of popular religious devotion. The Oratorio della Beata Vergine Assunta is also known as Battuti Bianchi and is located in the historic centre of Pozzolo Formigaro; it bears witness to the former importance of confraternities. For day planning, the art trail passes through the historic centre, while the Stradone runs through the countryside between Bettole di Pozzolo and Rivalta Scrivia.

The original church of San Martino in Pozzolo Formigaro was founded around the year 1000. The first documented mention of the parish of San Nicolò dates from 1523. The cultural heritage of Pozzolo Formigaro reflects the meeting of Ligurian and Piedmontese influences. Palazzo Morando has a frescoed façade in pastel colours, typical of the Ligurian “caruggi”.

Local cuisine and recurring traditions

The annual cycle also brings its own distinctive character: every year on Palm Sunday, the centre of Pozzolo Formigaro becomes a lively showcase of colours, aromas and traditions. The Festa di San Sebastiano culminates in a dinner with agnolotti held in the castle rooms. Agnolotto di Pozzolo is prepared by hand and served throughout the year at local sagre and tastings.
