Palazzo Spinola and Sacred Art
The Museo d'Arte Sacra was inaugurated in 2009. As a permanent exhibition, it is housed in two rooms on the piano nobile of Palazzo Spinola. At the same time, it is an off-site museum department of the Museo diocesano di Tortona.
Church, Gate, and Fountain in the Townscape
In the center of Rocchetta Ligure stands the Parrocchiale di Sant'Antonio Abate on a spacious church square. The church is located on a rise opposite Palazzo Spinola. At Porta Genova, you can also see the only surviving one of Rocchetta Ligure's two historic entrance gates. In front of Palazzo Spinola, a fountain is designed as a nymphaeum. A marble mask sits above a stone basin, with water flowing from its mouth. These individual architectural and decorative elements give a walk through the town varied points of interest, without requiring you to focus on just one aspect of the visit.
Rocchetta Ligure collects and preserves historical partisan documents, a specialist library with publications on the Resistance, and a permanent collection of firsthand testimonies. Alongside sacred art and the town's architecture, the history of the Italian Resistance therefore emerges as a tangible theme of the town.
The I sentieri del timo walking route
If you would like to combine culture with a route through the countryside, the I sentieri del timo walking route starts at the sports field in the hamlet of Frain in Rocchetta Ligure. It then crosses the Sisola stream and continues through woodland and terrain with puddingstone. The route runs across slopes covered with oak and chestnut trees and offers panoramic views over the upper Val Borbera. For planning your day, this provides a clearly described sequence of starting point, stream crossing, woodland section, and views over the valley.
Mountains and Destinations in the Surrounding Area
Around Rocchetta Ligure are the Castello di Torre Ratti castle and the Area Archeologica ed Espositiva di Libarna archaeological site. The mountains Monte Giarolo, Cosfrone, Monte Ebro, and Prenardo are also nearby. Further afield in the region are the Museo don Carlo Sterpi museum and the Castello di Borgo Fornari castle. You can therefore focus your stay on the cultural sites in Rocchetta Ligure or include additional destinations in the nearby and wider surroundings in your travel plans.
Practical Planning for Your Stay
For visits to Palazzo Spinola, opening hours are from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday to Saturday. Plan this visit as a separate part of your day. When choosing your accommodation, you can first decide whether sacred art, the townscape, the walking route, or the surrounding destinations should be the main focus. This allows you to tailor your trip to Rocchetta Ligure to your personal interests and to the desired balance of culture and countryside.
