Castle and Local History

Cereseto combines striking buildings with a landscape that can be explored along paths and routes. Castello di Cereseto was built around 1910 by the engineer Vittorio Tomielli in the Piedmontese style of the late 15th century. Its construction around 1910 thus combines a more recent building date with the architectural language of the late 15th century. As the first residence of the lawyer and entrepreneur Riccardo Gualino, the castle also represents the personal history of its first occupant.

Churches and Historical Traces

The parish church of San Pietro in Cereseto dates from the 18th century and was built according to a design by F. O. Magnocavallo. Its history goes back to 1348.

Other religious buildings include the Church of San Rocco and the Church of Santi Giacomo e Filippo. San Rocco was built in the 17th century, while Santi Giacomo e Filippo was built in the 18th century. The Church of Santi Giacomo e Filippo was administered by the confraternity of the same name. For those interested in culture, Cereseto offers churches from the 17th and 18th centuries alongside San Pietro’s history, which dates back to 1348.

Chapel and Abbey Ruins

The rural Chapel of San Martino was built in the 19th century between Cereseto and Ottiglio, near Cascina Raviara. Today, only a few ruins remain near a farmstead of San Cassiano Abbey, which was still mentioned in the 19th century.

Walking Around Cereseto

The “I Silenti Spazi di Cereseto” trail runs around the town of Cereseto and offers beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding hills.

It starts at the town hall and passes close to the castle’s bastions. For a walk in Cereseto, the town hall area is therefore the specific starting point; the castle bastions and views of the hills provide the trail with two spatial reference points.

Renkōji and Religious Practice

At Renkōji Temple, the Sūtra and the Odaimoku (Otsutome or Gongyō) are recited daily from Tuesday to Sunday at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Participation is free and open to the public. Those who include Renkōji Temple in their day’s plans can choose between the 10 a.m. morning service and the 6 p.m. evening service. Religious practice in Cereseto thus follows a fixed rhythm throughout the day.

Panoramas Across the Hills

The “Vigneti, spighe e casali nel Monferrato Casalese” route offers views of the Alpine arc, the Po Valley and small villages in Monferrato. These villages were built in prominent locations on gentle hills.

The two routes focus on different aspects of the landscape: “I Silenti Spazi di Cereseto” directs the view towards the surrounding hills, while “Vigneti, spighe e casali nel Monferrato Casalese” takes in the Alpine arc, the Po Valley and the villages of Monferrato. Along the route, broad horizons alternate with small villages on gentle hills: the Alpine arc and the Po Valley stand opposite settlements in prominent locations. For observing the landscape, the view thus extends from vast spaces to the individual villages of Monferrato.
