History between Documents and a Vanished Castle

Cellarengo is first mentioned in a document dating from 862. The former castle of Cellarengo already appears in a document from 1041, together with a chapel, a farmstead and a forest. The last traces of the castle disappeared after the Jona brothers from Canale sold its bricks in 1880. The former castle had a large hall and several rooms; it is said to have been surrounded by orchards and a vineyard.

Churches and Chapels as Tangible Travel Experiences

The Church of San Giovanni Battista contains frescoes by Luigi Morgari. Construction began in 1928 and was completed in 1930. The rural Chapel of Maria Ausiliatrice is dedicated to Mary, Help of Christians. The Chapel of the Immaculate Virgin of Lourdes also bears this dedication. The Chapel of Saints Lorenzo and Giovanni was formerly the parish church and is mentioned in this role during Bishop Broglia’s pastoral visitation in 1633. A memorial plaque for the fallen is dedicated to those who died in the First World War.

San Firmino: Location and Interior Layout

The architecture of the San Firmino Chapel can be observed particularly clearly. It stands in Cellarengo d’Asti near a crossroads, elevated above street level. The entrance from the façade is reached via a short stone staircase that bridges the difference in height and leads up from street level to the chapel. Inside, the chapel consists of a single rectangular hall with two bays and is covered by a barrel vault with lunettes.

Woodland Landscape in the Valle Ballerini

The woodland area in the Valle Ballerini covers approximately 10 hectares and forms part of a forested area of around 100 hectares extending across the municipalities of Cellarengo and Pralormo. It is an oak-hornbeam forest. Beech trees grow in the north-facing hollows, while Scots pines grow on the ridges. Numerous beech trees, together with natural regeneration through seedlings and young trees, characterize the woodland described.

Regional Products and Scheduled Events

In 2026, the Pro Loco of Cellarengo announced the 23rd edition of “A Furmagià” and invited visitors to taste typical products from the area on the three evenings of May 15, 16 and 17, 2026. The performance “Omineide” by Gli Omini was scheduled for August 9, 2026, at 9 p.m. at the Parco Giochi al Frutteto in Cellarengo. In addition, the sixth edition of the festival “Corti, Colline, Comunità e …” was scheduled for 2026, with Cellarengo included among the event venues.
