Antignano among churches, cycling routes and regional cuisine

Antignano combines religious buildings and historic traces with a landscape that can be explored via cycling and road routes, as well as through its agricultural features. The character of the town is revealed through its churches, historic evidence, valley and agricultural landscape, and a local product.

Churches and sacred buildings

The Chiesa Beata Vergine del Carmine is a Neo-Gothic parish church. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, and it also has three aisles. For an architectural appreciation, both its Neo-Gothic style and the clearly structured design of the sacred building are therefore significant.

On the outskirts of Antignano, in the Vigna area, lies the Cappella BMV della Mercede. The building in Borgo Vigna was constructed between 1626 and 1647. The chapel contains a large, valuable oil painting depicting the origins of the Mercedarian Order and its founder. The construction period and subject of the painting offer another way to explore Antignano’s religious cultural history.

The Pieve, or Church of San Giovanni, is mentioned in a document from the year 964 and has therefore been documented since that year. The church still exists today and is located near the center of Antignano. The castle of Antignano is also documented as early as 1165. The Church of San Rocco dates from the 17th century and complements this ensemble of historic sacred and local landmarks.

Cycling routes and landscape

The Alba–Asti route via Roero represents a combination of landscape and activity. It can be linked with the ASTI–ALBA route via the Langhe to form a circular route. The SP 8 offers a different perspective on the surrounding area. It descends between hazelnut groves, fields and poplar groves toward the Tanaro Valley. This route therefore takes in agricultural areas and the valley landscape in a clear sequence. Here, the landscape does not appear as an abstract backdrop, but through its specific crops, fields and rows of trees.

Mais 8 file and regional cuisine

The old corn variety “mais 8 file” is part of the local character. It produces a lower yield while offering very high quality. Stone milling of “mais 8 file” produces flour for polenta and tagliatelle. The valuable corn variety is still cultivated in Antignano. This means that regional cuisine can also be viewed through an agricultural product and its processing: from cultivation and traditional milling to two well-known Italian pasta and corn dishes.
