Cossombrato between history and excursions

Cossombrato combines a castle with churches from different periods, traditional medieval place names and excursion connections to the surrounding area. It also offers natural history and palaeontological attractions in the hamlet of Gorghi, as well as several parks and cultural destinations in the wider area. Some destinations are located in Cossombrato itself, while others are in the surrounding area or the wider regional area.

Castello dei Pelletta and Chiesa di Santo Stefano

Castello dei Pelletta has a semicircular main structure with a round tower attached to it. Parts of the building date from the 14th century, with other parts dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Another religious building is the Chiesa di Santo Stefano. It was built with the contribution of Count Gerolamo Pelletta between the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The church's two side altars were created at the beginning of the 18th century and are still visible today.

The Chiesa della Madonna dell'Olmetto also dates back a long way: its first mention dates from the 14th century. The Chiesa di San Rocco dates from 1700 and was built to combat an animal epidemic that affected ruminants and pigs.

Traditional local history

In the early Middle Ages, Cossombrato was known by the names Corsembrando or Corsembraldo. These names have been preserved in the archival documents of Asti, the Codex Astensis and medieval chronicles.

Excursion routes and cycling loop

For excursion planning, Cossombrato is connected by the Cossombrato–Madonna Olmetto–Settime–Strada Ronchi–Cossombrato route. Another excursion route connects Cossombrato with Villa San Secondo. The route via Madonna Olmetto, Settime and Strada Ronchi returns to Cossombrato, while the other includes Villa San Secondo.

A stage of the cycling loop passes the attractions Castello di Frinco, Castello di Cossombrato and the viewpoint at the parish church of Cossombrato.

Cultural destinations and parks in the surrounding area

The surrounding area of Cossombrato is home to Castello di Piea, the Arazzeria Scassa Museum, the Museo Diocesano "San Giovanni" and Palazzo Mazzola.

The Parco Rio Crosio, Parco Biberach Ander Riss and Parco Monte Rainero parks are also located in the surrounding area. In the wider regional area around Cossombrato, there is also the natural arch Arco Charles Emmanuel I - Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy.

Gorghi and the yellow sands of the Astian

The hamlet of Gorghi lies immediately outside the centre of Cossombrato. It is known for its natural history and palaeontological importance. Fossils of marine and land animals have been found in the yellow sands typical of the Astian.
