History along the Bormida

Monastero Bormida is a place where history can be discovered through its buildings and the Bormida river landscape. Castello di Monastero Bormida was originally established as a monastery dedicated to Santa Giulia. The Romanesque bridge over the Bormida River is also one of the notable historic sites; it was built by Benedictine monks.

Below Via Piave, in the gardens along the Bormida riverbank, you can see remains of the town walls and the canal that supplied the mill. Chiesa di Santa Giulia is an 18th-century parish church; however, its two side aisles and façade date from the early 20th century. The vaults of Chiesa di Santa Giulia depict the four Evangelists, the mystery of the Eucharist and saints.

Teatro Comunale also reflects several periods of construction. It is housed in a 1930s building that was originally built as a Casa Littoria, using stones from the demolished stables of the 18th-century Della Rovere castle. Literature is another clearly identifiable local connection. Le Panchine Letterarie di Monastero Bormida commemorate the great Langhe authors Augusto Monti, Cesare Pavese and Beppe Fenoglio. The Mulino di Monastero Bormida – also known as macinatoio Polleri – is associated with Augusto Monti: it was the writer’s birthplace.

The Biblioteca Civica Franco e Carolina Franzetti organizes “Aperitivi Letterari,” informal meetings with authors of books, poems, novels and essays. Alongside its memorial sites, this gives the town’s literary dimension a forum for discussion.
