Revigliasco d'Asti – Hills, History and Local Traditions

Hilly Landscape and Paths through the Surroundings

Revigliasco d'Asti extends across three hilly spurs that slope down toward the Tanaro plain. Two narrow, deep valleys separate these spurs from one another. Vineyards, hazelnut groves, orchards, fallow land and woodland alternate across the hills. The landscape therefore does not appear as a uniform area, but as a mosaic of different uses and natural environments.

Excursion Destinations and Activities

Bricco Novara can be reached from the town center via Via Ripasso. Bricco Salairolo can be reached from the town center via Via San Sebastiano and Strada Arditi. The “Bric & bike” route is 18 km long and can be explored on foot, by mountain bike or by e-bike. At the end of Via Ripasso, in the Lumello valley, also known as Valle della Vandera, the municipal sports facilities include a football pitch and a tamburello court.

Churches, Chapels and Local History

The parish church of San Martino was built between 1730 and 1750 in the simple Piedmontese Baroque style. It is dedicated to San Martino and has Sant'Anna as its patron saint. A tomb visible beside the presbytery contains the remains of Marchese Francesco Amedeo Enrico Roero San Severino, who died in 1766. The San Rocco chapel probably originated in the 17th century, but today appears as a reconstruction from the beginning of the 20th century.

The Palazzo Comunale is also part of the town's architectural history. It was built in 1858–59 based on a design by surveyor Rocco Porcio. Its central hall is modeled on the reception halls of 18th-century castles. The ceiling features elaborate paintings with medallions of Vittorio Alfieri, Silvio Pellico, Camillo Benso di Cavour and Alessandro Manzoni.

The house at Via Roma 12 is regarded as the place where Vittorio Alfieri spent his first year of life in 1749 with a local wet nurse. The ancient Via dei Gatti, now Via Trento, partly preserves the traditional urban character of the historic center of Revigliasco.

Barbera, Cherries and White Truffles

Barbera d'Asti wine is produced in Revigliasco d'Asti. The local cherry tradition includes a cherry festival held on the first Sunday in June, where the local Graffioni and Mora di Revigliasco varieties are showcased. The area also provides suitable habitats for white truffles (Tuber magnatum Pico); at night, truffle hunters roam the area in search of them.

Religious Festivals

The festival in honor of San Rocco on August 16 includes a procession, a blessing and the distribution of “pani di San Rocco.”
