San Marzano Oliveto – Castle, Churches and Wine

San Marzano Oliveto combines historic buildings and churches with the Parco naturale di Monte Oliveto, wineries and routes for walking and cycling. The specific themes therefore range from medieval architectural history and sacred architecture to nature, wine and outdoor activities.

Historic Sites and Churches

Castello Asinari di San Marzano is of medieval origin. In the 17th century, it was converted into a noble residence by the Counts Asinari. The building's historical context therefore encompasses both its medieval origins and its later conversion into a noble residence.

The former Church of SS. Peter and Paul is part of the area's sacred architecture. It is now deconsecrated, was built beneath the castle stables and is known as the Church of the Battuti. This brings together a historical status, a connection to the castle and another local name in a single building.

The parish church of San Marziano is designed in the Neoclassical Renaissance style. It has a single-nave layout as well as a Neoclassical chancel and choir. The interplay of these structural elements gives the church a clearly articulated architectural form.

The Waldensian church in San Marzano Oliveto is a place of worship belonging to the Evangelical Waldensian Church. Alongside the parish church and the former Church of SS. Peter and Paul, this also represents an Evangelical denominational presence in the town.

Nature as Another Travel Highlight

Parco naturale di Monte Oliveto is a nature park that opened in May 2010. The park therefore offers a distinct landscape experience alongside the historic buildings and churches.

Walking and Cycling Routes

Routes that pass by the Pali delle Memorie can be completed on foot or by bicycle; they are mapped on Outdooractive. The routes are therefore described for two modes of transport and digitally mapped.

The Sentiero Panoramico del Nizza runs from Castello di Moasca to Ciabot del Nizza. Its course is defined by the starting point, Castello di Moasca, and the endpoint, Ciabot del Nizza.
