Vigliano D'asti: Vineyards, Fossils and Piedmontese Delights

The Strada del Vino, known as Astesana, comprises eight routes through scenic landscapes. They run along quiet country roads following the hilltops and can be explored by car, on horseback, by bicycle or on foot. Festivals with Local Participation

The Festa Patronale lasts about a week and takes place between the first and second weeks of August. It includes the amateur race „Correndo per Vigliano“ and the walk „Quattro passi per Vigliano“. Another event was the third edition of „Alla scoperta delle balene“, held on 6 August 2026. This walk led through the area's forests and vineyards between Valmontasca and Sabbionera along Vigliano d'Asti's local „whale trails“.

Fossils Among Hills and Vineyards

A special aspect of the landscape is revealed by the Colline del mare of Vigliano d'Asti. They preserve marine fossils from the Pliocene, including molluscs, plants, shells and the remains of baleen whales. In nearby Asti, the baleen whale found in 1959 in the hamlet of Valmontasca is displayed at the Museo Paleontologico di Asti. The natural and cultural experience thus extends from fossil traces in the hills to their presentation in the museum.

Castello di Vigliano d'Asti

The Castello di Vigliano d'Asti is a residence built by the De Montibus on the ruins of an older castle. According to surviving documents, this older castle already existed in 1130. The castle stands in the highest part of the village and offers an exceptional panoramic setting. Today, it appears as a simple rectangular building; its main façade dates from the 19th century.

Wine, Truffles and Fassona Beef

Viticulture in Vigliano d'Asti produces Barbera, Cortese, Grignolino and Dolcetto, as well as fine grappa. The particularly well-maintained truffle grounds are also part of the area's local character: they yield prized white truffles of excellent quality. On 17 May 2026, the „FASSONA DAY“ returned to Vigliano d'Asti with an extensive programme of discussion, in-depth exploration and community activities centred on high-quality Piedmontese Fassona beef.
