Dronero: History in the Townscape

If you are looking for a place with historic character, regional culture and a variety of routes for your trip to Italy, Dronero offers several specific discoveries. The Ponte Vecchio di Dronero is a crenellated bridge with three arches and was built in 1428. The parish church of Saints Andrea and Ponzio also reaches far back into history: it dates mainly from the 15th century. Its Gothic portal, dating from 1455, was created by the Zabreri brothers.

Dronero's historic export trade is another part of the area's local history. Coarse hemp fabrics from the middle and upper Valle Maira were sold under the name “tele di Dronero”. This means the town can be viewed not only through individual buildings, but also through its connection to crafts and regional development.

Museums of Art and Regional Memory

The Museo Civico Mallé is well suited to a cultural tour with two different exhibition levels. Its permanent exhibition is presented on the first floor. The second floor hosts temporary exhibitions that change throughout the year. Separately, the Museo Luigi Mallé displays the private collection of an art historian from Dronero. The Museo Sòn de Lenga also welcomes tourists and adds to the town's cultural orientation.

Cycling and Hiking Experiences in Valle Maira

For your cycling plans, a quiet cycle path suitable for everyone and dedicated to families starts in the centre of Dronero. It leads via Monastero, runs along the Maira and then returns to Dronero. Another option is an easy to moderately difficult mountain-bike route that reaches the Passo della Piatta from Dronero via Archero and passes through wooded areas.

The Dronero–Busca section of the Sentiero sul Maira passes through Dronero's historic centre. The Sentieri Occitani also begin in Dronero and lead to the upper Valle Maira. For views over the town and the landscape, the Ponte del Diavolo is a viewpoint overlooking Dronero and the surrounding mountains.

Local Traditions and Enjoyable Stops

The historic Fiera degli Acciugai highlights a special connection with Valle Maira. This June fair in Dronero is dedicated to the itinerant anchovy sellers of Valle Maira. At the end of a tour of the Mulino della Riviera, visitors can enjoy traditionally made biscuits. They are made with flour produced in the same mill.
