Frabosa Sottana between caves, forests and high mountains

Frabosa Sottana combines a landscape of caves, chestnut forests and high mountain areas to create a destination whose character can be experienced across different seasons. A specific starting point for nature and hiking experiences is the Grotte del Caudano: they were discovered in December 1898 during the construction of the reservoir for the Frabosa Sottana hydroelectric power station. The Grotte del Caudano comprise a large cave rich in calcareous sinter formations, as well as numerous other interconnected chambers. Orientation therefore begins not with a general mountain panorama, but with a clearly identifiable place and its particular history of discovery.

The Grotte del Caudano have seasonally varying opening hours; advance registration is required. These two points are therefore an integral part of planning if you would like to combine a visit to the cave with a stay in Frabosa Sottana.

Hiking between the water trail and Mondolè

The Sentiero dell'Acqua is a circular trail rated E in difficulty. It begins at the Grotte del Caudano and initially follows the Sentiero Francesco Musso. Together with the green chestnut forests, this creates a landscape in which forest sections and higher mountain areas stand side by side. The area of Frabosa Sottana reaches more than 2,200 metres at Mondolè. In summer, trekking and alpine hiking are possible here.

The connection to Mondolè remains defining in winter as well. The Mondolé Ski area is accessible from Prato Nevoso, Artesina, Frabosa Soprana and Roccaforte Mondovì. The ski area Prato Nevoso is located at an altitude of 1,500 metres and, together with Artesina and Frabosa Soprana, forms part of the Mondolè Ski area.

Festivals, products and mountain culture

The events calendar adds established cultural occasions to the landscape. The Fiera di San Giorgio is a traditional event for the patron saint's festival on 23 April; after a long absence, it was resumed from 2006 onwards. It includes a large livestock exhibition with a competition for the best animals. The Fiera di San Giorgio also includes a market for typical local products.

In autumn, the Galà della Castagna d'Oro takes place on the second weekend of October in Frabosa Sottana. The event combines mountain culture, gastronomy, folklore, sport and entertainment. The Saturday programme includes stalls and exhibitions of typical products and high-quality handicrafts. Another cultural destination is the Museo della Montagna e della sua Gente, housed in a restored former school building in the hamlet of Miroglio. It is precisely this combination of mountain traditions, regional products and specific venues that gives a stay an additional focus beyond hiking and skiing.
