Levice: Stone, Valleys and Trails in the Alta Langa

Levice between the Bormida and Uzzone Valleys

Levice lies on a ridge separating the Bormida and Uzzone valleys. At the same time, the town belongs to the Alta Langa, a landscape of successive terraced areas and wild gorges. The fortified village has a checkerboard settlement pattern on a slope, which is considered rare in the Langhe.

Stone Architecture and Sacred Art

Stone can be seen in several defining buildings in Levice. The parish church of Sant'Antonio Abate was rebuilt between 1766 and 1776. Palazzo Scarampi is a Renaissance building constructed in the 16th century and built entirely of stone. The stone streets are also part of the townscape: paving made of “sternìa” was intended to give mules' and horses' hooves better traction.

The Madonna del Bricco Chapel is also known as the Church of the Visitation. It was built of stone between the 16th and 17th centuries. The Church of San Rocco dates from the 12th century and lies outside Levice's historic center at a strategic crossroads of important trade routes, pilgrimage routes and access routes to the town. Its frescoes from the early years of the 16th century are an example of Late Gothic painting with Renaissance influences.

Routes to Chapels, Valleys and Hilltops

The “Anello Madonna del Bricco” route begins in the center of Levice and climbs uphill to the Madonna del Bricco Chapel. Another circular route, the “Anello delle due Valli”, begins in front of Levice's town hall, passes the Cappella Sant'Anna and reaches the path through the Bormida Valley.

Levice also offers several specific route connections for cycling travelers. The third stage of the Grande Traversata delle Langhe by mountain bike leads to a hilltop above Levice's houses. The “Alta Langa Bianco” route also connects with the “Alta Langa Verde” route at Levice.

Another route is called “Sua maestà la nocciola Tonda Gentile”. It runs through Cortemilia, Bergolo, Levice, Prunetto and Pezzolo Valle Uzzona before returning to Cortemilia. The route places Levice within a broader context linking the towns of the Alta Langa with the Uzzone valley area.

Tower Ruins at the Highest Point

The ruins of an old tower are located at Levice's strategically highest point. From the site of the old tower's ruins, it was possible to overlook the entire Bormida Valley from the border near Cortemilia to Monesiglio. A short detour of about 100 meters along an unpaved road from the Grande Traversata delle Langhe leads to the ruins. They are associated with the town's first early medieval settlement.
