Vinadio between Fortresses, Mountain Lakes and Alpine Trails

If you are looking for a place in Italy with a distinctive fortress history and alpine landscape, Vinadio offers several clearly distinguishable themes for planning your trip. The area includes high-altitude lakes; historic paths and hikes are among the other highlights.

Fortress and Historic Architecture

Forte di Vinadio is one of the largest fortifications in Piedmont and the only one to enclose an entire village. Construction began in the summer of 1834 at the behest of King Charles Albert of Savoy and lasted 13 years. Forte di Vinadio comprises three areas open to visitors.

When the parish church of San Fiorenzo di Vinadio was redesigned in the Baroque style, the Romanesque bell tower remained in place.

Another architectural landmark is the historic Via N. Sauro, which also bears the name “Chariero Drecho”. It preserves numerous examples of medieval alpine architecture. In addition, the “Montagna in Movimento” exhibition includes around 40 interactive, synchronized video environments and more than 60 video programs in six thematic areas.

Hiking Trails and Mountain Landscape

The long-distance hiking trail GTA, the Grande Traversata delle Alpi, passes through the Vinadio area. The valley trail Lou Viage also runs through the area. Thanks to numerous military roads and mule tracks, Vinadio also offers opportunities for mountain biking.

One specific tour leads from Vinadio to Forte Neghino. The hike is 5.23 kilometers long, involves 285 meters of elevation gain, and can be completed as a loop or as an out-and-back route. Up to the fort’s high plateau, it follows a fully preserved military road.

The hike to Monte Nebius is 9.8 kilometers long, is an out-and-back route, involves 1,100 meters of elevation gain, and begins at the settlement of Neraissa Superiore. The distances and elevation gains help you plan the two tours objectively in terms of scope and elevation difference.

Alpine Lakes, Thermal Waters and Sanctuary

The Vinadio area is home to 30 alpine lakes at elevations between 2,000 and 2,350 meters.

The Terme di Vinadio thermal complex is located at an elevation of 1,320 meters and uses sulfurous waters from pools at elevations between 2,400 and 2,600 meters. The Santuario di Sant'Anna di Vinadio is 17 kilometers from Vinadio, on the road to Colle della Lombarda, at an elevation of 2,010 meters, and is described as the highest-altitude sanctuary in Europe.
