Musso between Alpine Trails and Regional Culture

Musso is one of Ormea’s Alpine settlements. The peaks Monte Mongioie, Monte Rotondo, Bric di Canoia and Cima delle Saline are located in the immediate vicinity of Musso. These four peaks give the area around Musso a distinctly Alpine character. The trails near Viozene add specific links to hamlets and a marked section of the route. Musso thus combines mountain destinations, trails near Viozene and regional cultural attractions in the wider surrounding area.

Hiking between Viozene and Mussi

On January 26, 2020, the organized hike “A spasso tra le borgate di Viozene” passed through the hamlets of the Viozene district, including Mussi. A borgata is a hamlet; Mussi is a borgata of Viozene. The “Risorgenza delle Vene da Viozene” hike begins at the church in Viozene and follows a wide, wooded path towards Rifugio Mongioie. On this route, a marked return variant descends to the provincial road at the Borgata Mussi. The two routes remain distinct for day planning: Mussi is one of the hamlets crossed on the first hike, while on the second, the borgata marks the return section to the provincial road. Those who divide the route into separate sections can consider the start at the church separately from the return near Mussi.

Classifying hiking trails by length and elevation

The Balconata di Ormea is a hiking trail approximately 40 kilometers long at an average elevation of 1,200 meters. Anyone classifying a hike by length and elevation is given two different planning parameters here: the kilometer figure refers to the total route, while the elevation figure refers to its average value. This does not define a specific day stage. The average elevation is a reference point for the entire hiking trail and not a figure for each individual section.

Cultural attractions in the wider regional area

In the wider regional area around Musso are Palazzo Fauzone, the Museo Della Ceramica Di Mondovi', Forte Rocca Liverna and Monastero di Santa Maria. Palazzo Fauzone, the museum, the fort and the monastery represent four different types of buildings: palace, museum, fort and monastery. Those who do not want to plan their stay solely around mountain trails can include these building types as additional themes when planning regional excursions. For those interested in culture, the four destinations can be planned as a separate thematic area alongside the trails near Viozene.

A local tradition from Mussi, a borgata of Viozene, recounts that on All Souls’ Day, the residents of Mussi went to Mass early at San Bartolomeo so that their deceased relatives could take over the warm beds at least once a year.
