San Bernardino: Cycling Routes and Fortress Heritage in Ceva

When you choose San Bernardino as a travel destination, you will primarily encounter two cycling routes that pass through the area. The “Ceva–Ceva: Un tour fra i colli della Valle Tanaro” tour leads to Priero via the small hamlets of Mollere and San Bernardino. The “Tour Profumi e Colori” cycling route runs from Ceva through San Bernardino towards Savona along the SP430 state road. Ceva also offers notable examples of Piedmontese architecture and fortress history.

The Cathedral and Fortress as Cultural Highlights

Ceva Cathedral displays features of the late Baroque period. Its vault paintings were created by Andrea Vinaj in 1864.

Forte di Ceva is a historically significant example of military architecture and the Piedmontese fortress system. The underground chapels in Forte di Ceva overlook the ravine above the town of Ceva and feature a cycle of 17th-century frescoes. Forte di Ceva also includes an underground passage through the rock of the fortress. At Forte di Ceva, an outer walkway follows the old guard path and the fortress bastions.

Two buildings stand in the area of Ceva Castle: Palazzo Rosso and Palazzo Bianco. The two names complement the historical reference to the town with individual buildings and provide another tangible perspective for exploring Ceva’s architectural heritage.

Cycling Routes between the Valley and the Hills

The “Un tour tra i colli” cycling loop is 55 kilometres long and includes 1,080 metres of elevation gain. When planning your day, the 55 kilometres can be considered separately as the distance and the 1,080 metres as the ascent. Both figures belong to the same loop, but refer to different aspects of the route. It runs between the Val Tanaro and the gentle hills of the Langa Cebana. The distance, elevation gain and landscape help you distinguish this loop from shorter or less uphill outings without defining the route according to a particular riding style. Planned breaks can also be factored into the day alongside the distance and ascent.

The second connection with San Bernardino is called “Tour Profumi e Colori”. It leads from Ceva through San Bernardino towards Savona, using the SP430 state road. Together with the tour to Priero via Mollere and San Bernardino, this creates a route pattern with different directions: once via Priero and the small hamlets, and once along the SP430 towards Savona.
