Roccabruna: Hiking Trails, Churches and Occitan Culture

Roccabruna Between Trails and History

Roccabruna combines hiking trails, Occitan culture, historic churches, rock art and regional cuisine. If you are looking for accommodation for your stay in Italy, you can plan your days around trail duration and elevation gain while getting to know different sides of the town.

Hiking Trails with Different Profiles

The Sentiero del Chast'lass is a three-hour trail with 529 metres of elevation gain from Borgata Castello and follows an old popular pilgrimage route to the Santuario di Valmala. The first two stages of the Sentiero di Valle of the Percorsi Occitani pass through the Roccabruna area. From Espaci Occitan, L’Adrech – I Sentieri del Sole takes 5.5 hours and covers 400 metres of elevation gain, while La Promenada is a two-hour trail with 100 metres of elevation gain. At the Centro Sportivo Valle Maira by Roccabruna’s swimming pool complex, the Percorso Ginnico begins, with 16 equipped stations. This allows you to compare shorter trails and longer day stages side by side based on their documented profiles.

Short excursions on the Strada dei Cannoni are possible from Roccabruna; they begin in Borgata Sant’Anna and lead uphill through the forest to Colle della Ciabra. For a longer profile, there is Lou Viol d'la Rocho Auto: the circular route takes 7 to 8 hours, covers 1,000 metres of elevation gain and follows the historic network of paths in the upper municipal area of Roccabruna. Climbing enthusiasts will find Rocca Cubiera, a 1,307-metre-high vertical monolith that serves as a climbing wall. The Chastelàs climbing crags offer more than 70 routes equipped with bolts, pitons and nuts, up to difficulty grade 7C+.

Occitan Culture in the Townscape

In Roccabruna’s central districts, themed streets and neighbourhoods have bilingual signs in Occitan and Italian. In addition, Roccabruna has designed its streets as an open-air museum dedicated to the Occitan regions, troubadours, musicians, martyrs and seers. The visible bilingualism and the town’s themed design give your exploration a clear cultural focus.

Churches and Religious Heritage

The Church of San Giuliano in Roccabruna was mentioned as early as 1226 and was founded before 1150 by monks from Oulx. It houses a relic of the church’s patron saint. The Cappella della SS. Trinità in Borgata Castello features two arcades in the section before the presbytery, dated to the 11th century.

The Church of SS. Maria Vergine Assunta is located at an exceptional viewpoint and preserves a 17th-century baptismal font. The Church of Sant’Anna is also situated at a viewpoint. Near the Assunta parish church, the Cappella di San Giovanni was expanded in the 1920s and 1930s to accommodate the many pilgrims.

Roccerè and the History of the Landscape

Monte Roccerè is a significant Bronze Age rock art site of international interest. The Roccerè archaeological site includes the Masso Altare, which bears the site’s most significant engraving. The preferred access point is in Sant’Anna di Roccabruna, where the specifically designated route begins. Information about guided tours is available from the Amici del RocceRè association. A visitor centre is also planned for the months of June to September.

Events and Local Cuisine

The Filiera del legno and the Fiera di Valle are events held in Roccabruna in September and October. They include presentations of local products and small craft businesses from Valle Maira, as well as a traditional chestnut festival. Local inns, restaurants and trattorias are associated with traditional mushroom-based dishes. In this way, the local cuisine adds a seasonal accent to the trails and cultural themes.
