Castle History on the Hilltop

Benevello combines a distinctive local history with paths through the rural surroundings. The focal point is Castello di Benevello: it was built in the 14th century as a fortification on the hilltop where the town center is located. The Marquises Falletti commissioned the construction from the brothers Simonino and Pietro. Several changes of ownership and renovations later caused the military defensive features to disappear and transformed the Castello into an aristocratic country residence. Those interested in Italian architectural history will therefore find not just a single historic name here, but can also trace the transformation from a defensive structure into a representative country residence.

Churches, Hills, and Expansive Views

The religious buildings also tell a story of changes in the town. The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Pietro in Vincoli was demolished in 1928 and relocated to the hill where the derelict second church, San Secondo, stood. There, it took over the role of Benevello's parish church. About one kilometer from Benevello, the Chiesa di Madonna di Langa stands on a hill along Provincial Road 106 toward Bossolasco. The viewpoint in front of the church offers views across southern Piedmont. According to a local legend, Saint Francis prayed in the Chiesa di Madonna di Langa during his journey to Liguria.

Panoramic Trails and the GTL Stage

Benevello has two panoramic trails through the rural surroundings for walks and hikes. They provide contact with largely untouched and undeveloped nature, as well as unique panoramic views. The second panoramic trail begins on the road to Bossolasco in the Belmondo area, follows the ridge, and returns to the same road after about two kilometers. According to the municipal description, both panoramic trails are signposted and suitable for all fitness levels. This allows you to plan your days in Benevello with either a manageable loop or a longer route connection.

Another option is stage 12 of the GTL – Grande Traversata delle Langhe from Benevello to Pavaglione. From Benevello, it initially follows Provincial Road 230 toward Montemarino, then continues along a side road toward San Bovo and proceeds over a wooded ridge toward Boscasso and Pavaglione. The different route profiles help you distinguish between a panoramic trail in the area around the town and a stage crossing several landscape sections when planning your trip.

Museums and Destinations in the Surrounding Area

The area around Benevello includes Casa VIGNA as a museum, Palazzo Comunale Alba as a palace, Museo Federico Eusebio as a museum, and Artecontemporanea di G.Dalpozzo & D.Coffa, also a museum. The wider regional area also includes Area Verde Giovanni Falcone Paolo Borsellino, a garden, as well as Terme di Acqui Terme and Parco del Castello, two parks. Bric Cupazzolo is a hill in the area around Benevello and complements the landscape themes surrounding the panoramic trails and hilltops.
