Santa Maria Assunta: Romanesque Architecture and Art

The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta dates from the 12th century and was built over the remains of an ancient Roman temple. Its interior is Romanesque in style as far as the altar and is divided into three naves. Medieval capitals with carved depictions of animals complement the architectural impression. The church also houses Fermo Stella da Caravaggio's painting “Deposizione della Croce” from 1548. The parish church is located at the entrance to Armeno on Viale Cadorna and borders a car park.

Circular Trails with Different Highlights

The Anello Prati circular trail is 4.3 kilometers long, has an elevation gain of 70 meters and a stated duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes. From the town center, it leads through the meadows along the Agogna stream, past “Bontà” and the fitness trail. Gli anelli di Armeno comprises a network of seven walking loops. A short turnoff from the Anello Falò circular trail leads to Monte Falò, where it offers a 360-degree panoramic view.

Sovazza and the Mountain Areas Around Armeno

The Sovazza district of Armeno lies on a ridge above the valley of the Agogna River. The Chiesa di Santa Cecilia in Sovazza was founded in 1602. The church square in Coiromonte offers a sweeping panoramic view. A comfortable path leads through the pretty village of Chéggino, offers panoramic views of Lake Orta and descends to Bàssola by the church.

The Museo degli Alberghieri

The Museo degli Alberghieri displays work tools, photographs, written testimonies, menus, rare cookbooks and old newspapers. Over the past four centuries, thousands of people left this area of the Cusiana to work in kitchens, hotels and restaurants around the world.

Santuario di Luciago and Religious History

The Santuario di Luciago, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, became a local destination for religious worship. Numerous votive offerings hang on the walls of its naves. The old chapel of the sanctuary contained a fresco from 1520 depicting Christ crucified with the Sorrowful Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist. A solemn procession took place on September 8. It was subsequently decided to build a small church near Mazzarone and renovate the existing old chapel halfway between Armeno and Mottarone.
