Churches and Architectural History

For travellers interested in culture, exploring Paruzzaro begins with its religious buildings. The Chiesa di San Marcello is a Romanesque, single-nave church with a semicircular apse. The Torre Campanaria San Marcello is an original, well-preserved Romanesque bell tower in the style of the Comacine School. The tower is dated to the period between 1050 and 1075.

The Chiesa di San Siro was expanded between 1591 and 1595 from a chapel dating back to the 12th century. This was carried out on the orders of Bishop Francesco Bossi and Cardinal Cesare Speciano. Particularly rich in detail is the carved walnut pulpit from 1598: its five panels depict the four Evangelists and the Virgin Mary trampling the dragon. The church also has a main altar made of precious marble dating from 1793.

The Chiesa di San Rocco was rebuilt and consecrated in 1720. It has a wooden altar from the Valsesian school.

Watercourse, Mills and Local History

The Vevera stream crosses the S. Eufemia area in Paruzzaro. Historically, its water powered the Visconteo mill of Sabbione and the 17th-century mill known as “in Costa bella”. In this way, the watercourse is linked to tangible evidence of the local milling history.

The Oratorio di Santa Eufemia was rebuilt in the mid-17th century on the remains of a chapel along a historic trade route that connected Arona with Lago d'Orta. Two monumental Romanesque gates have been preserved in Borgoagnello. The trade route and gateway structures complement the religious buildings with further historical connections.
