Discover Caltignaga: Culture, Fortress and the Novara Plain

Caltignaga combines impressive historic buildings with a landscape that can be explored along a circular route through the Novara Plain. At the centre is Castello di Caltignaga, with its surrounding moat, large gate, drawbridges, courtyard and well. This historic setting is complemented by religious architecture, visible remains of a Roman aqueduct, as well as museums, gardens and parks in the surrounding area.

According to tradition, Chiesa del Patrocinio was built in 1743 by a wealthy man as a votive offering in honour of the Virgin Mary. The Oratorio Chiesa del Patrocinio contains an image of the Madonna that is still painted on the building; it is therefore also commonly known as “della Madonna della Cascinetta”. Outside the fortress is a garden of around four moggie, enclosed by a wall except on the eastern side.

Traces of Roman hydraulic engineering and a route through the plain

Along the road, the remains of the Acquedotto Romano – I “Murajon dal Boia” can be seen beside two modern canals. In Caltignaga, historic infrastructure and contemporary landscape features therefore meet directly.

The “Rogge e Badie” circular route begins in Caltignaga’s town hall square. It follows a route with paved and unpaved sections through the Novara Plain.
