Comignago between Nature and History

Comignago combines the Lagoni di Mercurago Nature Park with a multifaceted local history and several destinations in the surrounding area and farther afield. Lagoni di Mercurago and the Surrounding Area

The Lagoni di Mercurago Nature Park covers 473 hectares and is located in the municipalities of Arona (Mercurago), Comignago, Dormelletto and Oleggio Castello. Comignago is one of these municipalities. The Spiaggia dei Caravalle and Spiaggia del Sasso Cavallazzo are located in the vicinity of the town; both are beaches. Church, Campanile and Abbey

The parish church of San Giovanni Battista in Comignago was rebuilt in the 17th century on the site of an older religious building dating from the 12th century. Its campanile is originally Romanesque, received a Baroque spire and was extensively remodeled. The old tower of the parish church served as a lookout tower and as a collection point for agricultural produce. The Santo Spirito Abbey in Comignago has an elegant and imposing tower that still rises above the town today and features biforas and small arches. Its origins date back to Roman times. Molino Vaglio adds another historical trace: it is one of four preserved historic mills in Comignago.

Festival and Other Cultural Destinations

The local calendar adds a recurring date to the historic sites: the Festa Patronale di San Giovanni Battista patron saint's festival in Comignago takes place every year on June 24. The area around Comignago also contains two museums, the Museo Archeologico and the Museo Meina, the Rocca Borromeo, a fortress, and Villa Bellini, a palace. In the wider regional area is the Funivia del Sasso del Ferro, a viewpoint.
