Cureggio: Baptistery, Museums and Landscape

Cureggio combines an established architectural heritage with a rural setting and its own culinary tradition. In the surrounding areas, meadows, forests, vineyards and cultivated fields shape the landscape. At the same time, the Cureggio and Fontaneto Blond Onion represents a special product of the Province of Novara: The growing area includes Cureggio and Fontaneto d’Agogna. Historic Buildings and Sacred Art

An important landmark is the Battistero di San Giovanni o di Santa Maria Assunta. The baptistery dates back to the early 12th century and was renovated in the 16th and 18th centuries. Its octagonal interior contains four semicircular apses. Traces of the baptismal font can also be seen, making it possible to read both the spatial design and the building’s historical use.

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta contains 16th-century frescoes and polychrome marble altars from the 18th century. The Church of San Pietro in Marzalesco has a semicircular apse and valuable 15th-century frescoes. Together with the Baptistery, these two churches offer different perspectives on sacred architecture and furnishings from different periods.

Cureggio’s historical character also includes the partially preserved mill equipment of the Mulino Congera. It includes a waterfall or cascade and a wooden wheel that is now disengaged.
