Fontaneto D'agogna: Castle, Trails and Regional Cuisine

The Castello di Fontaneto d'Agogna is first mentioned in the 10th century. It had a square layout with four round corner towers and two square towers. Ravelins were positioned in front of the eastern and western entrances and exits. The complex therefore provides an illustrative picture of its former defensive structure, without implying that all areas can be accessed today.

The Oratorio dei Santi Fabiano e Sebastiano is located on Piazza Castello. The oratorio measures 8 × 4 metres and occupies one quarter of the nave of the former Benedictine church, which was dedicated to Saint Sebastian. The altar bears a fresco depicting Saint Sebastian, the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and Saint Joseph protecting the castle.

A footpath leads from Piazza Castello to the Oratorio dei Santi Fabiano e Sebastiano. This path is also accessible to people with disabilities, and access is free of charge. The Castello di Fontaneto d'Agogna has entrances from Piazza Castello and Piazza dell'Annunciata; the areas are privately owned. For your visit, it is therefore important to clearly distinguish the freely accessible path to the oratorio from the private areas of the Castello.

Springs, Hills and Trails to Ghemme

The Chiesa di San Martino stands on the outskirts of the settlement of the same name, near the “fontana di San Martino” spring. Another notable building is the Torre del Mirasole, a 19th-century structure in the hills towards the municipality of Ghemme.

The Torre del Mirasole lies between the settlements of Case Nuove and Tapulino. It can be reached via unpaved paths, which are recommended especially in spring and summer for walking and mountain biking. One route leads from the settlement of Camuccioni to the Torre del Mirasole through deciduous forests of oak and chestnut trees, small cultivated areas and a few small vineyards. The “02-(GF) Percorso Verde” cycling tourism route ends at the Chiesa di Fontaneto d'Agogna.

Festivals of Onions, Wine and Culture

The Fiera della Cipolla takes place in Fontaneto d'Agogna every third weekend in September. During the two-day event, onion-based dishes are offered for tasting. The event also includes a farmers' market with producers from the region. A local product is therefore at the heart of an event that combines culinary discovery with a market visit.

FontanetoArteSapori takes place every year in June and comprises three weeks of themed enogastronomic evenings. Under the direction of chefs from the region, high-quality dishes and wines are offered for tasting. The programme also includes cultural evenings in the square.
