Sizzano – Wine, Hills and Traces of History

Sizzano combines a distinctive wine culture with open rolling hills and traces of various eras.

Sizzano DOC and vineyard experiences

Sizzano DOC consists of 50 to 70 percent Nebbiolo (Spanna) and 30 to 50 percent Vespolina and/or Uva rara (Bonarda novarese); in addition, up to 10 percent of other non-aromatic red grape varieties that may be grown in the Piedmont region may be permitted. This composition makes the wine a concrete starting point for exploring the grape varieties and regional wine production.

The tasting profile is also described precisely: Sizzano DOC is ruby red with garnet-red highlights, has a vinous and characteristic aroma with delicate notes of violet, and tastes dry, spicy and harmonious. At La Piemontina, the Casinò del Vino experience includes a guided tour of the winery with insights into all stages of production, followed by a blind tasting of four wines. La Piemontina also offers a vineyard picnic overlooking the Monte Rosa massif.

Hills, views and trails around Sizzano

The rolling hills around Sizzano offer views across the plain and the mountains. Like the entire Monteregio area, they have a distinctive microclimate influenced by Monte Rosa.

The private Chapel of San Giuseppe lies south of Sizzano along a hiking route. The Chapel of Madonnina della Pace is located on the hiking route near Sizzano and was built in memory of those who fell in the Second World War.

The Risaie Ciclabili cycle route no. 7 runs between Ghemme and Fara via Sizzano.

Archaeological heritage

A significant Roman settlement was discovered on the northern edge of Sizzano. Sizzano's archaeological heritage includes the inscription “Epigrafe di Augusto” from the 6th century. The Museo “Come Eravamo” is located in the area around Sizzano.

Destinations in the wider surrounding region

The wider surrounding region of Sizzano contains several different destinations. These include Castello di Buronzo, Castello del Guado and Castello degli Avogadro. The Grotte di Ara and the Montefenera Caves are also located in this wider surrounding region and are caves. Spiaggia dei Caravalle and Spiaggia del Sasso Cavallazzo are classified there as beaches. The range therefore extends from castles and caves to beaches, although these destinations are not located directly in Sizzano.
