Massino Visconti between the Hillside and the Lake

Massino Visconti lies on the southeastern slope of Monte San Salvatore and combines a historically shaped townscape with sweeping views. The view extends across the southern Lago Maggiore as far as Novara and Milan. The Chiesa di San Michele stands in the centre of Massino Visconti. Its leaning bell tower is a striking feature of the building. Only the Romanesque bell tower remains from the original church building. It dates from between 1025 and 1050, has a square floor plan and six storeys.

The art-historical significance of the Chiesa di San Michele continues inside. The square apse contains a rich cycle of 15th-century frescoes attributed to the workshop of Giovanni de Campo. Here, you gain a tangible connection to the town's older ecclesiastical architecture without Massino Visconti losing its character as a community that has grown over time.

Another distinctive building is Castello Visconteo. The extensive complex includes a massive tower from 1548 and 1555, later buildings, courtyards and gardens. From the gardens, the views stretch far across the town or the lake.

The sculptor Luigi Canuto created it in 1972 to commemorate the many umbrella makers from Massino and the Vergante. Monte San Salvatore: Paths and Panoramas

The slopes of Monte San Salvatore offer walking paths through the greenery and panoramic views. The mountain rises 794 metres above Massino Visconti. Its summit can be reached via approximately 4 kilometres of paved road. This creates a varied day plan between the narrow streets of the historic centre and the open landscape impressions on the hillside.

Around the year 1000, the religious members of the Abbey of Massino began building a church dedicated to the Redeemer on Monte San Salvatore. Three chapels arranged one above the other were added later. Together, they form a distinctive complex of Alpine Romanesque art. The combination of walking paths, altitude and sacred architecture makes the mountain an independent part of the local history.

Festivals and Local Character

The festival in honour of the Madonna della Cintura takes place every year on the third Sunday in August. The festival includes a traditional procession in which an old wooden statue is carried on the shoulders around the summit. Another insight into the town's community life was provided in 2025 by the 25th evening Giro dei cortili. The gastronomic event took place in the streets of Massino Visconti and was accompanied by musical entertainment. The year is significant here: it describes the 2025 edition and not an event that has been permanently confirmed.

Getting to and Staying in Massino Visconti

One route to Massino Visconti starts in Domodossola, with a train to Stresa. From there, continue by bus on the Stresa–Borgomanero route; this bus stops in Massino Visconti.
