Nebbiuno amid lake views, forests and history

Nebbiuno combines views of several lakes with forested paths, historic churches and summer events in Corciago. This provides various options for an individually planned trip to Italy: nature can be explored via hiking and mountain biking trails, while local history can be experienced at churches and settlement remains as well as in the medieval settlement of Campiglia.

Landscape with expansive lake views

Nebbiuno lies on a large moraine terrace halfway up the slope of the Vergante. From here, there are expansive views of Lake Maggiore as well as the lakes of Monate and Varese. At 921 metres, Monte Cornaggia is the highest mountain on the Sentiero Novara. From the summit, the 360-degree view extends to the mountain ranges of Monte Rosa, Resegone and the Grigne, as well as to the plains of the provinces of Novara, Verbania and Varese.

Hiking trails and stages of the Sentiero Novara

The forested area around Nebbiuno has well-signposted trails that can be used on foot and by mountain bike. This makes it possible to experience the landscape in different ways, from hiking through forest passages to touring by mountain bike.

Stage 14 of the Sentiero Novara previously runs via Silvera and Colazza and leads along forested paths to Fosseno di Nebbiuno. Stage 15 leads from Fosseno di Nebbiuno, Lavatoio district, to Cassano, is 12 km long, takes approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes, and has difficulty rating E (hiking trail).

The trail passes through birch and chestnut forests to the “Sasso del Pizzo” viewpoint. From the “Sasso del Pizzo” viewpoint, Lake Maggiore and the lakes of the province of Varese can be seen; the area is equipped with a picnic facility.

Churches, settlement remains and Campiglia

The churches around Nebbiuno also provide insight into the history of the area. The first reliable records of the Church of San Giorgio in Nebbiuno date from 1380. Construction of the Church of Sant’Agata in Fosseno began in the 14th century, while the original core of the Church of San Leonardo in Tapigliano dates from the 12th century.

The history of the area goes back even further: finds of Iron Age tools and Gallo-Roman necropolises in the Nebbiuno area provide evidence of settlement since the 7th century BC. Campiglia is a medieval settlement of houses with narrow, winding paths. In Corciago, the Church of Santi Nazaro e Celso is probably considered one of the hundred churches that San Giulio had built in the 4th century.

Summer events in Corciago

Every summer, a series of events takes place in the Corciago district at the Madonna della Neve site, organised by local associations. At the summer events in Corciago, visitors can sample regional dishes and products such as polenta with Tapulone, Piedmontese roast, agnolotti, Toma del Mottarone and local Gorgonzola.
