Moncalieri between the Castle, the Po and Piedmontese culture
Castle history and historic squares
Moncalieri is crossed by the Po River and extends partly across the plain and partly over hilly terrain. Castello di Moncalieri illustrates the town’s importance in the history of Piedmont: it is one of the Residences of the House of Savoy in Piedmont, which have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, formerly Piazza Maggiore, also bears this historical imprint. Its current size dates back to 1629; the residences of the most important noble families are located around it.
A striking remnant of the older fortifications is Porta Navina. It is the only surviving one of Moncalieri’s original medieval fortified gates. At the foot of the Castello Reale, there is also the Giardino delle Rose in the old town. Its distinctive shape is that of an exedra, and numerous roses define the garden.
Bosco del Re and special insights
Bosco del Re combines a formal garden and a landscape park through distinctive architectural features. The Ninfeo is a central element of the grounds and is supplied by an underground feeder channel approximately 110 metres long. The same woodland is home to the Torre del Roccolo, built around the middle of the 19th century as an observation tower so that the young Vittorio Emanuele II could hunt migratory birds. For orientation, Bosco del Re has two entrances: Santa Brigida 3 and Viale Rimembranza.
If you prefer historic interiors and lesser-known areas, Castello Segreto offers a special thematic approach. This tour explores parts of the Castello Reale di Moncalieri that are not normally open to visitors. Since June 2026, the route has also included the castle’s Cappella Regia. The Royal Community Tour Moncalieri includes admission to Castello di Moncalieri.
Collections, theatre and local culture
The Real Collegio Carlo Alberto houses archaeological, artistic and natural history collections, as well as collections of scientific instruments. It is located in a former 13th-century Franciscan monastery that was rebuilt in the 18th century. The Collegio is open to the public by prior arrangement; guided tours take place on the first Sunday and the second, third and fourth Saturdays of each month.
The Biblioteca Civica “A. Arduino” also combines history with contemporary culture. It is housed in part of the former SAFFA match factory, which was founded in Moncalieri in the second half of the 19th century; the building was constructed at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, the library is a media library and art gallery with books, magazines, DVDs, audio CDs, computers and works of contemporary art.
The Fonderie Teatrali Limone were founded in 1924 by Giuseppe Limone in Moncalieri’s Borgo Mercato district. The complex comprises two theatres and two rehearsal rooms. Admission is charged for the performances included in the programme. The celebrations of Beato Bernardo are another established part of local cultural life. They are a centuries-old tradition in Moncalieri that combines religious and civic events.
The flavour of the town
The local character also includes Cavolfiore di Moncalieri. This cauliflower is available in shops from mid-October until the end of winter. This clearly seasonal speciality complements the town’s historical, architectural and natural features. Moncalieri is therefore particularly suitable for travellers who want to combine castle history, collections, theatre, squares, gardens and regional products in a culturally focused stay.
