Verrua Savoia between the Fortress and the Hills
If you would like to combine historic buildings with distinctive landscapes, Verrua Savoia offers several clearly different points of interest. The Fortezza di Verrua Savoia stands on a hill spur projecting above the Po; almost the entire area of Verrua Savoia is hilly. The landscape extends from Monviso to the hills of the Po and Monferrato.
The Fortress as a Distinctive Landmark
Renovation work, as well as work on some rooms and access roads, is currently under way at the Fortezza di Verrua Savoia. Today, only the Dongione with its associated structures and the Ponte del Soccorso are visible from the complex. The fortress therefore combines a striking position above the Po with a clearly limited visible structure—an aspect you can take into account when finding your bearings on site.
Churches with Different Building Histories
The present-day Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giovanni Battista offers several historical points of reference. Construction began in 1749; it was consecrated and opened for worship on 2 September 1759. The façade has a late-Baroque character typical of Piedmont. The organ of the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giovanni Battista was built by the Bergamasque Serassi family for the church of the Franciscan monastery in Crescentino.
Other churches also enrich the cultural landscape. The Chiesa di Santa Lucia di Siracusa in Sivrasco was built in 1695 on the site of an earlier chapel dedicated to Madonna del Carmine and is considered to still be in good condition. The Chiesa di San Pietro in Collegna is a late-17th-century church with a single nave, a presbytery and a small choir.
Planning for the construction of the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Sebastiano took place between 1760 and 1763. The Chiesa di San Giacomo Apostolo in Cervotto was elevated to the status of an independent parish. For travellers interested in culture, this creates a broad range of churches whose building history extends from former chapel sites to 18th-century plans.
Nature and Landscapes in the Surrounding Area
The fossil mud volcano of Verrua Savoia is a geological natural feature. In addition, the Isola di Santa Maria special protection area also includes the territory of Verrua Savoia. These two points of interest complement the hilly landscape with a geological and a natural-environment focus, without requiring any particular type of travel.
Castles, Parks and Regional Destinations
The Castello di Gabiano and the Castello di Piea are located around Verrua Savoia; both are considered castles. In the surrounding area, the Foresteria del Castello di Camino is also considered a fortress. Further afield in the region is the Museo Clizia - Palazzo Luigi Einaudi, which is considered a museum. Also located there are the Parco di Via Togliatti, the Parco Fluviale del Bricel and the Parco del Mauriziano; all three are considered parks. In the wider regional area, the Arco Charles Emmanuel I - Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy is considered a natural arch.
You can choose a hotel in Verrua Savoia according to your interests: churches and architectural history, the Fortezza, or the hilly landscape and its natural features. This way, your accommodation remains part of your travel planning without overshadowing the destination's different highlights.
