Premeno amid Trails, Heights and History

Premeno combines hiking trails with golf, as well as churches, woodworking and regional products.

Hiking with Views and Varied Stages

The Volon Trail Premeno follows a 13.5-kilometre circular route with 645 metres of elevation gain. It begins in the park of Villa Bernocchi, leads through the historic centre of Premeno and the hamlet of Esio, and then follows the route known as the “Sentiero dei Partigiani”. Along its course, the trail reaches Sasso Corbè at an altitude of 1,066 metres. It also leads to Pizzo d’Omo at 1,070 metres; from there, there is a view of Lake Maggiore and Cima Morissolo.

Another hike open to everyone begins and ends at Villa Bernocchi. It leads via Bagn and Pollino and through the “Australie” back to Premeno and Villa Bernocchi. Shorter sections connect Esio, Alp Medèe, Pian di Sole and Cima di Pizzo d’Omo. From Esio, a path leads to Alp Medèe, the mountain pasture of Esio, in 30 minutes. From Alp Medèe, Pian di Sole can be reached in one hour, and from Pian di Sole a path leads in 20 minutes via part of the pine forest to Cima di Pizzo d’Omo.

Golf at Altitude and Historic Sites

Golf Piandisole is located in Premeno at an altitude of around 1,000 metres and offers views of Lake Maggiore and the Monte Rosa area. The standard 9-hole course has double tees. Golf Piandisole was established in summer 1962 in the hamlet of the same name in the municipality of Premeno.

The Oratorio di San Salvatore was built in 1645. The festival of the Oratorio di San Salvatore is celebrated at the beginning of August. The present parish church of Santa Margherita in Premeno was built between 1938 and 1944. Woodworking is practised in the hamlet of Esio. Among other things, agricultural implements, rakes, baskets, chopping boards and spoons are made there, including the “masne” used to stir polenta. The highest mountain pastures in the municipality of Premeno lie above the hamlet of Esio in the direction of Pian di Sole, in the Medeè area.

The Volon Trail is a solidarity event. The participating associations use the proceeds for projects benefiting the community.

Chestnuts, Polenta and the “Ravasa” Apple

In Premeno, roasted chestnuts are eaten; chestnuts are still dried on the “grà”. In winter, dried chestnuts are served with milk or used to make jams and desserts such as the famous Montebianco.

The “ravasa” apple is considered typical of Premeno. It is also regarded as very juicy and tasty and keeps well throughout the winter.

Getting to Premeno

By car, you can reach Premeno from the A26 via the exit towards Verbania and the SS34 del Lago Maggiore as far as Intra. There, follow the signs to Arizzano, Bèe and Premeno. The nearest railway station is Verbania-Pallanza, 16 kilometres from Premeno; from there, you can reach Premeno by public transport.
