Cossogno between Val Grande and nature experiences

Cossogno is considered a preferred gateway to Val Grande National Park. The village is home to Acquamondo, the environmental education centre of Val Grande National Park and a water museum. The Centro Visita di Cicogna offers another insight into the region with a free exhibition on the natural, historical and cultural aspects of Val Grande.

Gorges, forests and views of Lake Maggiore

One of the area’s distinctive landscapes is the Orrido “Paradiso dei cani”, a deep gorge carved by water over thousands of years at one of the narrowest points in the valley. Despite what its name suggests, the Pineta d'Inoca is not a pine forest but a spruce forest with Norway spruce. Larches and Weymouth pines also grow in the surrounding area; the site is equipped with picnic tables.

The Runchio alpine pasture is also part of Cossogno’s landscape. Its existence has been documented since 1300. From Runchio, the Cossogno–Runchio–Alpe Aurelio trail offers expansive views over Lake Maggiore towards the Lombard shore. The Una storia d'acqua route passes through Val Pogallo, with impressive waterfalls, pools reflecting the greenery of the forests and small flowers on grey rock faces.

Historical evidence and living traditions

The Ponte Romano is a stone single-arch bridge above the Torrente San Bernardino, on the boundary between Cossogno and Rovegro. A year of construction, 1773, is carved into one of the stones. The Chiesa di San Brizio is dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours; the origins of this dedication date back to the mid-12th century.

Religious traditions also shape the Festa del Toc. Every year in Cossogno, on 26 December, the feast day of Saint Stephen, it is renewed through the distribution of blessed bread. The first document mentioning the Festa del Toc is a parchment charter from 1328. However, the distribution of bread as alms is believed to date back to the 13th century.

The El mulin det Camil, a historic combination of a walnut oil press and mill, is located in the Ramolino Valley. It is also regarded as a symbol of the resourcefulness of mountain communities and the hardships of everyday life faced by past generations. A hydroelectric power station was built at Lanca in 1892 to transmit and distribute electrical energy over long distances.

Trails for different interests

Several trails explore Cossogno through different themes. The Sentiero della religiosità is a circular route around Cossogno that passes rural chapels, devotional frescoes and the Oratorio di Inoca. The trail at the Oratorio di Inoca passes the chapels of the Stations of the Cross. The Oratorio di Inoca was built in the first half of the 17th century on the site of an older chapel dedicated to the Madonna di Re.

The Sentiero della foresta connects Cossogno and Rovegro via the Ponte Romano above the Torrente S. Bernardino. The Sentiero dell'energia leads to the first Italian hydroelectric facility with long-distance transmission of alternating current. The Sentiero della fatica passes through the Corte di Rugno, an old alpine pasture of Cossogno, and reaches the Conca d'Aurelio, where numerous rock carvings can be found. On the Sentiero del castagno, the trail follows a mule track through old chestnut forests to the impressive Corte di Miunchio.

The La civiltà della fatica trail begins in Cicogna and leads to Alpe Prà and Leciuri in Cossogno. The Parco di Inoca is a starting point for hiking trails into Val Grande. The Una storia d'acqua route is listed as taking approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, excluding breaks and the return journey.
