Crodo: Discover Culture, Mineral Water and Mountain Landscapes

Crodo appeals to travelers who want to discover Italian local history not in isolation, but in connection with the landscape and everyday life of the region. Archaeology, sacred buildings, museums, mineral water and paths in the surrounding area offer different ways of exploring the town.

Archaeological Traces and Sacred Buildings

At the Muro del Diavolo near Arvenolo, archaeological finds from the Iron Age and the Roman period bear witness to the site's ancient use. Its panoramic location suggests that it served as a place of worship. The Muro del Diavolo is also a dry-stone wall made of large stone blocks. It is about 6.30 meters high; its front initially measures 20 meters, then steps back by 13 meters and continues for another 40 meters.

On the way from Cravegna to Salera, you can admire the chapels of the Stations of the Cross at the Sacro Monte di Salera. They were built between 1731 and 1738 and fully decorated. Another sacred landmark is the Chiesa Parrocchiale di S. Stefano: it was originally Romanesque, while its bell tower dates back to 1026.

The Ettore Conti hydroelectric power plant in Verampio is also one of the region's historic buildings. It was built between 1912 and 1914 by Ettore Conti from Verampio and points to another aspect of the region's history of technology.

Museums, Mineral Water and Understanding Nature

The Museo Nazionale delle Acque Minerali Carlo Brazzorotto displays five complete historic mineral-water bottling plants, more than 15,000 full bottles and over 80,000 labels. Technology, bottles and labels form three focal points of the same collection, complementing one another in concrete ways within the museum. The mineralogical section of the Museo Mineralogico Ossolano Roggiani-Bianchi displays scientifically significant minerals from the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola basin.

The Centro Visita di Crodo has a geological teaching laboratory equipped for multimedia projections. For experiencing the landscape on foot, there is the Arvenolo hiking route: it starts at the parking area of the Latteria Antigoriana in Crodo and leads back to Crodo. The start at the parking area of the Latteria Antigoriana and the return to Crodo mark the route's two fixed points. For planning purposes, Crodo therefore remains the starting point and return destination of this route.

Peaks and Destinations in the Surrounding Area

The Colmine peak and the Colmine di Crevola peak are located in the immediate vicinity of Crodo. The Pizzo Cortefreddo peak and La Pizzetta peak are located in the area around Crodo.

The Parrocchia Ss. Gervasio E Protasio church is also located near Crodo. In the wider regional surroundings are the ruins of Gmeinalp and the Chiesa Parrocchiale della Beata Vergine del Rosario.

A Distinctive Taste of the Town

The local character also includes Crodino, a drink that originated in Crodo in 1965.
