Rodari and family culture

If you would like to combine a trip to Omegna with cultural experiences for different age groups, there is no getting around the work of Gianni Rodari. The Parco della Fantasia is a literary and educational park for children. At its heart is Rodari’s “method of fantasy”, which the park teaches and promotes. The complex includes the Ludoteca, where children can play freely or with the support of entertainers. Wooden building blocks, a wall blackboard, a kitchen, an indoor swing and a crossword puzzle on the ceiling define this unusual play area.

The Museo Rodari is located in the historic center of Omegna. It is an interactive museum dedicated to Gianni Rodari and his fantastic stories. In addition, the “Gianni Rodari” children’s literature festival was launched in Omegna in 2014. The festival features a ten-day program of theater performances, film screenings, readings and creative activities. Admission is free, and the program is aimed at all age groups.

Historical heritage in the center

Omegna can also be explored through individual buildings and historic streets. In the historic center, the Quartiere Vaticano preserves houses from the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries along Via del Butèr, now called Via Alberganti. The Porta Romana is also of medieval origin: The gate was built around the 11th century and is considered the only surviving remnant of the five medieval city gates.

The original core of the Collegiata S. Ambrogio was probably built between 960 and 969 AD. Inside, there is also a painted and gilded wooden polyptych by Fermo Stella da Caravaggio, created in 1547. The Chiesa parrocchiale di San Gaudenzio houses an altarpiece by Filippo Cavalazzi, created in 1567. Such tangible artistic and architectural heritage provides several historical points of reference for your walk through Omegna, without requiring you to focus on a single theme.

Monte Zuoli and paths by the water

Monte Zuoli offers various options for exercise and enjoying the landscape. The Percorso Vita Monte Zuoli connects Omegna with the summit of Monte Zuoli and includes structured rest areas equipped with exercise stations along the route. Monte Zuoli also has a circuit for mountain bikers and two natural climbing areas on rock faces. From Monte Zuoli, there are views of Lake Orta and the surrounding mountains. Those who would like to include a quieter section in their day plan will find a footpath along Omegna’s entire lakeside promenade.

Local character

The Forum Omegna is also part of the local experience. There, a shop offers products from the local food industry and handicrafts from the surrounding valleys. This allows you to experience Omegna from several perspectives when planning your trip: as a place associated with Rodari and children’s literature, as a destination for historical heritage, as a starting point for activities on Monte Zuoli and as a place where regional food and craft products are showcased.
