Scopello between Alpe di Mera and the Sesia

Church with datable details and organ

The Chiesa Parrocchiale Maria Vergine Assunta in Scopello was built in 1583. Inside, there is a baptismal font dated 1585. Both dates give the church a clearly comprehensible historical depth: the building and one of its furnishings can be assigned to different points in the late 16th century.

The organ was manufactured in 1925 by the Vincenzo Mascioni company from Cuvio and bears the work designation Op. 366. The organ therefore dates from a considerably more recent period than the building and baptismal font.

Alpe di Mera for snow sports and access

Alpe di Mera has 30 kilometres of groomed ski slopes. The “Campo” beginners’ area extends for approximately 400 metres and is served by a drag lift. The approximate length is important here: it does not describe the area as exactly 400 metres long, but as covering around 400 metres.

Traces of former mining and the chapel

In the Genziana area stands the tall chimney structure, considered the only surviving evidence of Scopello’s former mining complex. The Cappelletta della Madonna della Neve also stands on Alpe di Mera. It was built by shepherds to protect the area from wolves.

The Sesia in Scopello’s built-up area

The tourist fishing reserve “Fiume Sesia – Scopello” is approximately 1.2 kilometres long and passes through Scopello’s built-up area. In this section, the Sesia has numerous rapids and deep pools bordered by wide gravel banks. The river landscape is therefore characterised by changing water features and clearly recognisable gravel banks. The reserve and the river landscape thus belong to the same spatial section within Scopello.

In the fishing reserve, fishing is permitted using the Tocco method, spinning or fly fishing. Brown trout, marble trout, brown trout–marble trout hybrids and rainbow trout are found there.
