Donori: Churches, Festivals and Traces of Sardinian History

Donori offers visitors different ways to experience Sardinian culture and landscape. Historic churches, festive processions, archaeological remains and places surrounded by greenery provide starting points for a journey in which you can discover the character of the area through its buildings, traditions and nature.

Churches and Festivals in Donori

The parish church Chiesa di San Giorgio Vescovo is dedicated to Saint George, Bishop of Cagliari and patron saint of the town. Its construction dates back to the beginning of the 17th century. Donori was re-founded around the same time after a flood had destroyed the town.

The rural church Chiesa sa Defenza, Sa Defenza in Sardinian, was built in 1732. It is located in Località Coxinas, surrounded by fields and olive groves.

The festival of San Giorgio Vescovo is celebrated in the third week of April with a procession, a parade in Sardinian traditional dress, musical performances and fireworks. The main festival in honour of the Madonna of Sa Defenza takes place on the third weekend of September. It includes a traditional procession, Sardinian traditional dress and Traccas – decorated ox-drawn carts.

Archaeology and Local History

The Ex Monte Granatico is one of the oldest buildings in Donori and hosts cultural activities and initiatives.

At the Tomba dei giganti Inguttosu Mannu, the remains of numerous human skeletons were found, laid one on top of another and indicating use as a collective tomb. The burial site rests directly on an outcrop of rock and has an apsidal corridor.

The megalithic burial site Mitza ’e Fidi is just under 10 metres long and built from white and reddish granite blocks. The disused Miniera di S'Ortu Becciu mine is a short distance from the town of Donori; lead containing silver and quartz were mined there.

Landscape and Regional Views

Sa Rocca de is Piccionisi lies between two small elevations in an area rich in gorges and unspoilt nature. The ancient site S'Acqua 'e is Dolus and the viewpoint Punto panoramico di Bruncu Mogumu are also located in the vicinity of Donori.

The wider regional surroundings of Donori are home to the Creartistico Museum, the Museo Archeologico di Sinnai - Pinacoteca Comunale and the Campus della scienza, della tecnica e dell'ambiente Museum. The viewpoints Panorama dal Bastione di S. Remy, Terrazza Umberto I and Punto panoramico di Monte Urpinu are also located there.

For planning purposes, the eighth edition of Donori TerrAccogliente is also relevant: it was announced for Saturday, 12 October 2024, and Sunday, 13 October 2024, with cultural and food-and-wine routes.
