Lagoon, forest and nature park
The Gutturu Mannu Nature Park also extends into the area of Capoterra and lies within the Special Conservation Area ITB041105 (Foresta di Monte Arcosu). The Stagno di Capoterra lies within a lagoon covering 1,300 hectares. Arcosu contains almost 4,000 hectares of forest with holm oaks and cork oaks, surrounded by Mediterranean scrub. In terms of understanding Capoterra geographically, both the nature park and the extensive lagoon landscape are therefore important reference points.
Watch flamingos and use the trails
At observation points on the Stagno di Capoterra, visitors can watch flamingos and black-winged stilts. Around Casa Spadaccino, trails along the lagoon can be used on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike. The Chiesetta di Santa Barbara in the mountains of Capoterra was built around 1280 in the Romanesque-Pisan style. The Church of San Girolamo was first mentioned in documents in 1565. At the Chiesetta di Sant’Efisio in Su Loi, the Sant’Efisio procession stops every year on 1 May along its traditional route from Cagliari to Nora. The Su Loi coastal tower is a small watchtower. Architectural history, religious tradition and a clearly classified coastal structure thus emerge as distinct cultural points of interest.
